Torment and Control

June 24th, 3859 A.E

The night had never been kind to Joe. Not even in his sleep. The guilt he bore from the year before was still heavy on mind. The screams echoed in every part of his being. The Darkness wallowed in his soul. But now his guilt played with a new string. It played with his heart. At first, his subconscious mind saw images of David. But now…now there was another image that tormented his mind…but it was not of the purple haired prince.

Screams filled the nights at Fang, something the inhabitants were not used to. But since the arrival of the strange, young werewolf, it was something that everyone was becoming accustomed to. Joe, however, was not. He was sitting upright, breathing heavily, as he looked around quickly, his knife drawn. When he realised he was alone, in the room he’d been given in Fang; the knife was lowered and placed back into the safety of its scabbard under his pillow.

Lying down on the bed, once again, Joe closed his eyes. This was a recurring nightmare that had come back to him for the fifth time that month. Ever since he’d escaped from Quoja and entered Fang, after which Joe had shortly gone through his first transformation in a month, he would be plagued at night by these horrific dreams.

He looked over to the door, when a worried, half-asleep Dai ran into the room in naught but a pair of sleeping trousers. Yet another full moon was but a few days away, causing Dai’s hormones to go haywire. Out of a hole in the back of his pants, a fluffy brown tail swayed aggressively. His nails had also started to grow sharper.

These side effects, from the closeness of the full moon, only happened to Dai due to a unique genetic condition - the same condition was to blame for Dai's ears - after an experiment that occurs 2 years ago went wrong, when Lucullus was attempting to create another talisman. No other attempt has been made since, due to the materials needed turning up scarce. Right now, Dai was currently checking the windows, doors and dark corners. Once he was satisfied with his search, he walked over to Joe and sat on his bed. Joe looked back up at Dai, seeing the look he gave him.

“What?” Dai scowled at him again

“You know what! This is the fifth time this month Joe, you have to tell Lucullus about this ‘dream’ of yours.” Joe sat up against the headboard and pulled the covers back up around his waist, when Dai diverted his eyes, a slight blush filtering across his cheeks. “Look, it’s only a matter of time until Lucullus is the one running into your room at night checking for danger instead of me…” he moved closer to Joe, so he was leaning over him “You have to tell him, this could give us the upper hand in the war.” Joe looked Dai in the eyes. He was being completely serious, and Joe knew Dai was right, but Joe hated to be wrong. Moving away slightly, Joe sat opposite Dai on the bed.

“And what are you going to do about it? It’s my choice Dai, not yours. You ran away because you where afraid. It’s only a dream Dai, I’m not afraid-” Joe was interrupted as Dai pushed him down onto the bed, on top of him, holding him down by the shoulders.

“You think this is about me? I didn’t want to run away, I didn’t even want to become a Werewolf. You have no idea what I’ve been through and how hard it has been for me the past 3 years. You have no right to judge me so…” Dai got off Joe and ran out of the room, upset, angry and confused.

Joe lay there for a few more minutes, thinking about what Dai had said. He really didn’t have any idea about Dai’s feelings, or why he was so protective of him in the first place. Getting out of bed, he pulled on his trousers and walked down the corridor to Dai’s room. Knocking on the door, he waited for Dai to answer it. There was no answer. After knocking again a few more times, he tried the handle…the door was open…

Dai lay on his bed, hugging the pillow, as tears ran down his face. Speaking of his past brought up painful memories, but he would not fall into despair. When he heard the knock at the door, he didn’t bother to answer at first, hoping they would go away. But when they kept on knocking, he pulled the pillow over his head, trying to block out the noise. Then he remembered, he’d not locked the door…

When Joe entered the room, Dai looked away and wiped his wet cheeks with the coverlet. Closing the door behind him, Joe sat on Dai’s bed and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. In turn, Dai smiled sadly and placed his hand over Joe’s, squeezing it in gratitude. Joe’s other hand stroked Dai’s hair as he smiled back.

“I’m ready to stop being a jerk, and listen…” Dai smiled softly again, and sat up, wrapping his arms around Joe in a hug. Joe’s arms fell around Dais waist, rubbing his back soothingly as Dai sobbed into his shoulder. Once Dai had calmed down a little, he slowly told Joe about what had happened the past 3 years.

There were times when he laughed. Others when he cried. But Joe was sat there with him, helping him through it all. In turn, Joe told him about David and his time within Quoja, and by the time the sun had started to rise, they had both fallen asleep around each other on Dai’s bed…

Within Quoja, David lay in bed tossing and turning in his sleep. He dreamt of Scarlet, but it was not a pleasant reunion. He was embracing her, but suddenly, pain hit him in his chest, as he found it hard to breathe. Backing away, he found a stake sticking out of his chest, nearly through his heart, as blood dripped out of the wound, making his shirt a crimson red as it spread across the white fabric. As the stake drew itself further and further inside of his chest, David screamed so loud that his heart shattered, at the very sound, after the stake had driven through it. He fell to the floor, on his knees, as blood started to pool around him as it flowed out of his chest and down his body. Growing faint, he looked up at Scarlet in confusion. But the most disturbing thing was, the fact that Scarlet was laughing. An evil, dark cackle that came from his lovers’ lips instead of the soft giggle that he’d learnt to love.

His eyes flew open dangerously, filled with fear as he screamed. Lights flickered on all over the cavern, and Lord Valdrek ran into his room. David was shacking and covered in a cold sweat as he sat up clutching onto his head and heart. Lord Valdrek sat next to David and brushed the purple hair, which was sticking to his son’s forehead, away from David’s face.

David was breathing hard, shacking and seemed feverous. These nightmares where taking their toll on his grief ridden body, making him weak. Each week there was a different dream. It had all started the day after Scarlet’s death, earlier that month. He could not eat, he couldn’t sleep and his heart was still recovering from Scarlet’s death. The worst part of it was the fact that buried. David and the rest of the Vampires thought this a sick, practical joke. Little did they know that Scarlet was in fact alive once more…

A few hours later, David was sleeping once again. Lord Valdrek shut the door to David’s room, leaving him sleeping soundly. These nightmares where wearing out Valdrek as much as they were to David. The fits would have to end soon; else David’s life would be in jeopardy.

Later on that day, David was sitting on his bed, in his shirt and trousers again, hugging his knees to his chest, sulking. He hated to sulk, but he just couldn’t help it these past few days. It was childish really…
“Come on David, pull yourself together. They’re dreams, nothing more…god; this is so– so– childish! ARGH!! Stop it!” David shouted at himself, hitting the bed a few times, and gripping at his hair, before eventually giving up when he couldn’t be bothered telling himself off anymore. “This is crazy…” He got up and straightened his clothes, and brushed his hair, to look presentable before leaving. But when he reached for the door handle, he remembered something.

The talisman, his father had given him, was still on his bedside table. He’d look at it every now and again, but this time, it was as if it was calling to him. Walking slowly back over to the bed, he picked up the talisman and held it up in front of his face, staring at it. In turn, it seemed as if it was staring back at him. The largest ruby in the centre reflected his eyes, so it was almost like it had eyes of its own. Rummaging round in the draw, he found a plain, thin silver chain. Attaching the talisman to it, he fastened it round his neck, and then looked in the mirror. When he was satisfied with his appearance, he walked out of his room and down to his father’s chambers, knowing Lord Valdrek would be in his study.

Valdrek indeed was in his study, reading over paperwork and signing agreements. Life was hard being an elder; he knew that much from his time in power. A knock at the door echoed through the room, and into his study. He sighed and put down the letter he was reading and walked through his chambers to the door. When he opened it, he wasn’t surprised to see David there, as his son usually made a visit this time of day.

David walked in and closed the door behind him, before sitting down on his father’s bed. It only took a minute for him to keel over to one side, pull a cushion up from the bottom of the bed and hug it to his chest. Valdrek watched David from the corner of his eye. Ever since the nightmares had occurred David looked paler than usual. He rarely fed or slept and Valdrek needed to get some blood down the boy’s throat, even if it meant forcing it into him.

Valdrek placed the letter down and signed it before storing it away. Looking over at David again, he realised that his son was wearing the talisman and smiled inwardly to himself. It would give David the strength he needed, now he was weak, to get on with his life. Although…he still hadn’t found out what the after effects of reawakening the talisman was. He had a feeling that he would find out soon though…

David looked up when he saw his father watching him again; he did that a lot lately, so he must still be worried. Looking back down at the bed sheets, he sighed. He didn’t like worrying his father, nor the look Valdrek gave him when he watched him, like he was doing now. Looking back up again, but keeping his head lain down, David noticed that Valdrek wasn’t looking at him, but the talisman that was around his neck. He manoeuvred his arms around the cushion, which was still clutched to his chest, and started to fasten up his shirt, which he’d left open half way. Valdrek had stood and leant against the doorway while David did this, and placed a hand on David’s, stopping him from fastening his shirt.

“Leave it open David…our people will need to see it…” He removed his hand slowly, brushing his fingertips over the talisman as he pulled away. David lowered his hands.

“Yes father…” and dropped his arms so that they were back around the cushion, as Valdrek retreated back to his study. After some time, David drifted off into a light reverie. Valdrek, having finished his paperwork, was now sat on his bed, besides David, reading through a damage report from last month’s events. Every now and then, he would reach over and run a hand over David’s purple hair, next to him, before returning his hand to the report. After he did this a third time, David began to come around. “What?” David asked tiredly, rubbing his eyes softly. Valdrek smiled and laughed softly to himself.

“David, my boy, you can still surprise me after all your years.” He laughed again, ruffled David’s hair and shifted off the bed in order to return the report to his study.

Scowling at his father, David smoothed his hair back down and got up from his spot on the bed, following his father back into the other room.
“Father, have you ever considered getting someone else to do your paper work? Wouldn’t that be easier?” David stood against he doorframe, hugging his arms around his waist. Valdrek walked past him again, back into the bedchamber. He then began changing into some formal robes for lunch in the dinning hall.

“David…when you become an elder, you can have someone do your paper work for you. Personally, I prefer doing it myself, that is how my father taught me and how my grandfather taught him. It is the way of the world today David, you’ll get used to it…” David sighed and lay back on Valdrek’s bed, opening and closing his eyes tiredly.

Valdrek saw this and walked over to the bed, laying a hand on David’s forehead, stroking his hair. “Rest David, you’ve had a rough night…I shall tell a servant to stop by with something to help.” David smiled tiredly; nodding slowly then closed his eyes again and fell into a deep sleep. Valdrek left the room, leaving the sleeping David on his bed, hoping that the nightmares would stay away, and allow him to rest.
