Chapter 7

I wrapped the towel tighter around my head and opened my wardrobe. It was rare that Jake and I went out on a proper date – usually he was content to just hang out at one of our houses – so I wasn’t sure what to wear.
After much deliberation I ended up in a pair of black boot cut jeans and a black lacy see-through blouse that I rarely wore. I’d forgotten exactly HOW see-through it was until I put it on and I had to put a black strap top on underneath it.
I glanced at the clock as I put the blouse back on, 6:35. Enough time to do my hair and make-up before Jake came over.
I pulled the towel out of my hair and inspected the blue streaks in my mirror. They were starting to fade slightly but the rest of my hair – the black part – still looked freshly dyed. I’d have to get the blue redone soon.
I mentally calculated how much I had saved up as I started to blow dry my hair. I’d done two months worth of paper rounds and waitressing which should cover it fine, plus whatever else I wanted to blow a load of money on for no particular reason.
I clicked the hairdryer off when my hair had dried fully and pulled my phone out of my pocket. I scrolled through the phonebook until I found ‘Annalie – hairdresser’. I hit call and waited while it rung.
Annalie picked up on the sixth ring, “Hey Ash.”
“Hey, are you okay to book me an appointment?” I asked. Annalie was notorious for her partying lifestyle and you were lucky if she could talk to you at the weekend.
“Yeah, sure, I got a couple of minutes to spare before I go out.” I heard the click of a pen and the rustling of paper and then Annalie came on again, “What time do you want and on what day?”
“Erm, I guess I’m free next Monday at 5.” I uncapped my eyeliner and balanced the phone between my ear and my shoulder as I drew carefully around my eye. The irises were a soft pink this evening, due to my happy mood – I used colour change contacts to alter the colour depending on how I was feeling.
“May I remind you that I close at 7?” Annalie said sounding shocked that I wanted it that late in the day.
“I know, I just want the blue parts doing again.” I assure her, blinking rapidly to moisten my eye.
“Oh, okay. So, next Monday at 5, yes?” Annalie confirmed, and I heard a book bang shut and a pen click down.
“Yeah, that’s fine.” I resisted the urge to nod and mess up my eyeliner.
“Okay then. Are you going anywhere tonight?” Annalie asked.
“Yeah, Jake and I are going out to see a movie I think.” I put the cap back on my eyeliner and unscrewed my mascara.
I carefully applied it to my eyelashes as someone banged on Annalie’s door in the background.
“Sweet, anyway, I gotta go Ash, I’ll see you next Monday.” Annalie said quickly before she hung up.
“Sure, bye.” I muttered, flipping my phone shut and pushing it into my pocket.
I was just finishing my make-up when the doorbell rang and Macy came thundering up the stairs and into my room,
“Jake’s here! You look nice.” She commented, perching on the edge of my bed.
“Thank you.” I ran a hand through my hair and turned to face her, “Pass me my jacket.” I motioned to the black jacket that was sitting on the bed next to Macy.
“Here. You never go out, what changed?” Macy handed me my jacket and looked at me questioningly.
“Huh. I dunno. He just asked me when we were working.” I shrugged into my jacket and grabbed my handbag off the dresser.
Macy was right though, what had changed to make Jake suddenly take me out?
“Ash!” Aaron yelled up the stairs, “Jake is getting bored listening to what I did to the science lab!”
“Somehow I doubt that.” Macy muttered.
I laughed and wondered what they’d done, as I walked out of my room and started downstairs.
Aaron and Jake were in the hallway waiting for me and they both turned when they heard my approach, Jake was slightly faster, but only just.
“You look nice, but seriously, what kept you?” Aaron asked as I reached the bottom of the stairs.
I didn’t answer, I was too busy staring at Jake. I’d always thought he was beautiful, but now he seemed even more so. His hair was falling over his face in the same way I thought it had last night, it looked even better on him now that he was awake and moving around and his gorgeous green eyes were sparkling as they ran over me. He looked paler than usual and more tired too. His features had an almost foreign appearance – I couldn’t say which country – and when he spoke his voice seemed softer and darker at the same time.
I had never loved anyone as much as I did him at that moment in time.
“Ready to go?” He asked, holding out a hand for me to take.
“Sure.” I reached out to hold his hand and let him lead me to the door.
“Mum said not to be too late back.” Macy reminded me as we stepped outside.
“Whatever.” I closed the door behind us and lent into Jake as we walked down the street.
“So I was thinking we could go see the new horror movie that’s out and then we could go for dinner at an Italian place I know. You’d be back before midnight, what’d you think?” Jake asked.
“Sounds great.” I smiled.
At that moment I would have followed him anywhere without complaining.
