Back To Reality

Somewhere between here and reality I seem to have gotten lost." I puffed heavily on my third cigarette. For a moment I hesitated wondering if I dare continue. Staring out of the window I watch as the slight sprinkle of snow turns hastily into a flurry. “That’s why I’ve got to kill her off! – I’ve got to kill them all off!”
“What?” Are you crazy? Your books are on the brink of being adapted into a TV pilot!” Mandy gasped. “You should be celebrating!”
“Celebrating what exactly? I don’t want any of this Mandy.” I sighed. “I never did.”
“Don’t be so silly! You’re on the verge of being rich and famous” She giggled. “What’s wrong with you these days? You seem a little distracted.”
“I’m not being silly. This is all wrong. All of it. Call it off. Please!” I begged.
“Relax. Have another glass of champagne and tell Auntie Mandy what’s brought this mood on.”
I’ve been having these dreams.” I blushed. “In them there’s this man I’m fumbling with his trousers. Then I reach inside to touch his...”
“His what? Come on. It’s just getting good.”
“That’s just it – I wake up! I can never remember anything else. Thing is I know him.”
“If you’re ripping his trousers off I should bloody hope so! You slut!” Mandy joked.
“That’s not what I meant. I know him by his smell, and his voice. I sense him. Yet I never see his face.”
“You wouldn’t from down there!” Mandy laughed. “Honey. They are sex dreams. We all have them! Are you writing these down? There are loads of frustrated housewives would buy into this kind of thing. Think about it Casanova In Space!”
“Didn’t you hear me? “ I rolled my eyes in disbelief. “I’m going to have to kill them all off. These characters are taking over my life. I can’t breathe!” I felt the tears swelling up in my eyes but I was too exhausted to let even one fall down my cheek.
“You just can’t do that. Karenna is the coolest time travelling crime busting super hero there is! The double life thing with an extra twist. Teenagers will lap this up!”
“She’s opened this gateway to something or somewhere and it scares me.” I knocked back my drink as quickly as possible. “Sometimes I see him out of the corner of my eye but when I turn around – he’s gone.”

Mandy’s silence was deafening. I watched as a blue tit flew onto the window ledge shivered before flying away. “Lucky bird” I thought. “At least you can escape!”
Closing my eyes I wished I could go back and stop her from posting that ruddy competition entry that started this whole thing. I never wanted to be ‘discovered’ – I just wanted to make sense of the dreams that had haunted me as a child but Mandy saw ‘potential’. A potential that had became my curse.

“All your characters come from your dreams. What makes this one so different?”
“He’s saying my name for one. Usually I dream through my character’s eyes. Thing is I don’t know if I’m even dreaming anymore. All I know is he’s travelled through time and relative dimensions in space to find me and I will be his.”
“It’s this over night success thing. Plus you’re going to see your words come to life on the screen. I know how protective you can get over these things. It’s just your sub conscience battling with the chance of success. Don’t worry about it. It’ll pass.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. It was the first time she hadn’t used her favourite word - ‘Burnout’. Mandy used that word a lot. If I had writer’s block or I couldn’t get a character to gel with the story – ‘burnout’. This however was different and I could tell all Mandy could see were the money signs floating before her and the fame that would inevitably follow.

“It’s him. I know it is!” I sighed hardly daring to look Mandy in the face. I knew what her reaction would be. “I know you think I’m going mad. Maybe I am. But all the more reason to kill them off and end it now.”
“You’ve been working too hard. Have the weekend away, find yourself a man, have loud obnoxious sex and guaranteed by Monday morning all this will be a thing of the past.” Mandy winked.
“If only it was that simple.” I smiled weakly
“It is very simple. If this goes to plan you could have a major TV series on your hands. Is that exciting? Now stop being so serious and relax! I want to see a new you!”
“Okay. I’ll just go off and regenerate shall I?” I joked wondering what the heck I’d just said and what it actually meant.
“Even if it is him. I think you should go with the flow. You could get some more books out if this. Just remember to write it all down. After all it’s him you’ve got to thank for all this – think about it eh?”
“More books!” I replied sarcastically. “More money for you! More stress for me but I suppose if I do have a nervous breakdown I should put that into a book too!”
“That’s my girl! You just keep on writing. Now I don’t expect to hear from you until Monday.” Mandy kissed me on the forehead and was out the door before I could say another word.

“The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.” I stared at my computer screen willing for some sort of inspiration. The words mocked me. All I could hear was the echoing voice of Basil Brush shouting ‘Boom Boom’ round my drained empty mind. My eyes felt heavy. I longed to sleep but I knew I couldn’t because it would mean him being there. I toyed with ‘Mandy’s Magic Medicine Kit’ and wondered if I should try the pills? They were the lesser of the three evils as I just couldn’t face any needles nor could I face snorting another white line up my nose.
I began staring at my keypad in the vain hope that my fingers would suddenly begin typing but I had to admit I was tempted, very tempted even if it eased my pain enough for me to sleep or to write one page surely it would be worth it.
“If I succumbed would it mean I was a ‘tortured soul’ or just another cliché?” I thought as I toyed with the small packet of pills. “Best not. I could end up being found overdosed on the bathroom floor and Mandy would hate that, especially if I haven’t completed this stupid pilot.”

It must’ve been the thought of the lazy dog or the number of foxes I’d sub consciously starting counting because I suddenly realised that I was dreaming. Frantically I willed myself to wake up. Gasping for air my body lurched forward. My eyes nearly blinded by the brightness of the screen.
“Thank goodness for that!” I yawned. “I can’t be falling asleep now.”
I decided to make myself a sweet cup of tea. It was of my gran’s remedies and it worked every time.

I stood in the doorway sipping my hot drink. The combination of the sugar and caffeine made me relax. After another cigarette I decided to do something I hadn’t done in ages – go to bed.
“If he appears I’ll just play it out.” I thought as I snuggled under my duvet. I switched the radio on and ever so slowly I fell asleep.
Suddenly I was wide awake again but for once it wasn’t due to a dream. It was the curious echoing buzz from my printer. Grabbing my dressing gown I tentatively crept downstairs and pushed open the door.
“Funny. I don’t even remember leaving the computer on let alone the printer running.” I laughed. “I must’ve done it before I dozed off at the desk.”
It wasn’t until I saw the open documents in my Word package that I realised something was amiss.
“Who’s been looking in my files? I haven’t opened these in months.”

“That’ll be me. Sorry about that.” A voice behind me made me jump. Turning round I couldn’t believe my eyes. “The clarity is amazing. You can recall such detail!”
“I’ve had about enough of this!” I managed to stammer. “I can’t be still dreaming! As for you! You’re not even real! Somehow I invented you so I can damn well UN-invent you.”
“If I wasn’t real. Could you feel me doing this?” He teased as he gently stroked the side of my face. “I’ve searched through countless realities to find you. – ouch!”
“That‘s for invading my dreams! I yelled. “Now state your business.”
“You know what I want – you.” He whispered. “You want me. Your dreams showed me your true feelings.”
“I’m obviously having some sort of breakdown due to stress. That’s it I just need medical attention.”
“Well I’m a…”
“Don’t say it!” I interrupted “Don’t you dare! I don’t want even to think of such nonsense!”
“It’s not nonsense though is it? Look at you now all hot and bothered.” He smiled. “How do you know for sure what’s real and what’s not?”
“What makes you so sure of anything?” I murmured as our lips met. “This isn’t even possible I’m a fixed person in this reality. You’re a figment of my imagination. Right now a very real, hot, sexy figment.” My head was spinning as I tried to understand what was going on.
“That’s not entirely true now is it? Isn’t strange that the only world you feel belong is the one you write about? Have you even stopped to think how you can write vividly about places in the stars when you’ve never left your safe but boring little village?”
“It’s called imagination!” I muttered as he kissed my neck.
“Think about a pebble that causes a ripple in a pond.” The words appeared in my mind.
“I’m part of that ripple?” I gasped trying desperately to gain control. “That would mean not that there’s proof of time travel but time travel through realities. That parallel universes and other dimensions do exist.” Is that even possible? What am I saying?! If you’re to be believed then you and me…”
Staring into his deep brown eyes I couldn’t resist him any longer. If this was a sex dream. It was the most vivid hot intense dream yet. I could feel his hands as they gently caressed my breasts.
“Oh God! You’re real!” I whispered. “So real!” I gasped as we made love. I couldn’t understand it but I knew I had to be with him – what ever the cost.

“She was just here!” Mandy yelled. “He’s taken her to his dimension don’t you see she is real” You’ve got to believe me!”

“Curious case this one. Amanda believes that she is a character from a book that’s been written by one of her other personalities. This dimension jumper is a new one though.” The nurse stared directly into the camera hoping it captured her ‘good side’ and tapped on the two way mirror for effect. “In this live documentary series we’ll follow her various treatments and meet her other personalities. As you can she seems to have developed this bizarre love story to prove that this writer actually exists.”
