| Another completed chapter, but I'm not going to declare this one finished just yet... Matt was walking next to Stealth, and he looked at Stealth’s watch. 1:30. In the space of 24 hours he had developed a mysterious cut on his leg, found out about some strange lunatic who wanted him dead, killed his mother, his father had revealed that he never really hated him, then got himself killed, a boy who called himself ‘Stealth’ Showed up to tell him he was actually some sort of a warrior, and now he was heading off to a base somewhere he’d never even head of to fight a man he’d never met. It had gotten much darker now, and they were the only ones on the road. Matt ran his hand over a small dagger in his pocket. When they had started walking, Stealth had given it to Matt, and now he was running his fingers over it, feeling for the design. It was made of Titanium, Stealth had told him, but the handle was coated in a different metal. On the handle, there was a word engraved to it, Sakura. Matt didn’t know what it meant, in fact he thought it sounded more like someone’s name than a word. The blade itself was smooth, smoother than anything he’d felt before. He weighed it up and it was extremely light. He took it out of his pocket and held it out in front of him in his left hand. “Put that away” snapped Stealth at him. “If you’re spotted with that around here, the police will be on us like sweat.” Matt put it back in his pocket, annoyed. “Where are going anyway?” asked Matt “I’ve told you, we’re going back to base.” “No, I mean, what are we going to do when we get there?” “We’re going to wait. We can’t do anything until all the warriors are together.” “and how many warriors are there exactly?” “9. The nine warriors. We take our names from an old legend. It’s about a war fought a long time ago. The great war.” Said Stealth, who seemed relieved that they finally had a reason to break the silence. “What happened in that war?” “Well, 12 000 years ago, there was a black sorcerer called Rahn. He was as bad as they came, and he had an immense amount of power at his hands. He managed to create an army of all manner of creatures, not just humans. Anyway, ten people stood against him, Saint and his 9 Generals. That’s where our names come from; we take the names of the generals. There was a war between Rahn and everyone else, and nobody knows who won, but there were only two survivors.” “But if Rahn died all those years ago, how are we going to fight him?” “We don’t know how he did it, but recently Rahn has come back, and we think he’s going to try and finish whatever he wanted to do 12 000 years ago.” “So, why us?” Asked Matt “Because we’ve been chosen.” Matt looked vacant so Stealth carried on. “Two years ago, Joanne Plait, her family, me and my family went on holiday and Joanne found a section of mountains that no-one else could enter. It strange, that’s how she described it to me. She told me that she could see the archway, but no-one else could. I had to see it, so I went along and found that I could see it too. Our parents came, but they didn’t see it. So we went in, Just me and Joanne.” “As we entered, there was a clearing, and a cave. We went in the cave and found a parchment with some weird symbols on it. Then we went outside, to the clearing. Here we found 9 swords, scattered around.” Stealth stopped; he seemed uneasy over whether to continue the story to him. “I’m sorry Matt, I’ve already said too much, I can’t say anything else until I’m sure you can fight with us.” The silence continued for about 5 minutes, and Matt was desperate to break it, so he just decided to ask one question that he’d been trying to figure out the whole way. “Do you have an anismastis?” Blurted Matt. “Excuse me?” said Stealth, obviously shocked. “An Anismastis? I have one, she’s Kaman and she’s a Ferret.” “You have an anisma?” questioned Stealth “An anisma? Is that some sort of abbreviation?” asked Matt “Yeah, their full name IS anismastis, but we shorten it to anisma because, well, anismastis is too confusing.” He stopped talking, and after a brief pause, they both broke out laughing. They spoke about their anismas for the rest for the journey, and Matt learned a lot about Stealth’s. She took the form of a black coyote and although Matt couldn’t see her, he felt her presence and Kaman appeared at his shoulder and looked at the spot on Stealth’s side where they both knew Nohnayelle would be walking. * * * * * Matt found himself in a small room about 13 miles away from where he’d met Stealth. It had been a long journey and Matt needed rest, so he was given a room to himself with a shower and a bed and a meal was brought up to him. He undressed and got in the shower, the hot water felt like a godsend after the cold weather outside. When Matt finished in the shower he lay on the bed and fell once again into a dreamless sleep. He woke the next morning and checked the clock on the wall. 9 o’clock. He got up and thought about his dad. He had been taken from him so soon, and he didn’t even understand why. His dad had died leading him to the people he was with now and he was determined to help them anyway he could, for his Father. He gathered himself, and went downstairs to find Stealth waiting for him. He was sitting on a sofa in the middle of the largest room, putting on a set of leather sleeves, which looked like some sort of thing you’d expect to see in a samurai movie, with another set next to him. “I wondered when you’d wake. Come, put these arm and leg guards on quickly, we don’t have much time to linger, I’ve alerted the others and they are headed back to base now.” “Who are the others?” Questioned Matt “There are six of us at the moment, Me, Influence, Instinct, Gain, Patience and Fury.” “I thought there were nine.” Said Matt, remembering something Stealth had told him on the way here. “We’re still incomplete, remember? There’s still Joy, Hope and Sorrow to find. I suspect you may be one of them, so we are going back to base to find out.” “How will you find out? Will there be some sort of test?” Matt asked. “I’m sorry, you must be unaware” Stealth signalled to the arm and leg guards again. Matt put the guards on and was surprised at how they felt. He expected them to be cold, uncomfortable. They were the opposite. The insides were lined with soft fabric, and they felt as if they’d been heated to a decent temperature. Stealth went into the kitchen while Matt was putting them on, and he came out with two sandwiches, wrapped in foil. “Here” he threw a sandwich to Matt “Cheese. I hope you’re not Lactosi- Lastocer- Lacyto- errm.. Allergic to milk?” Matt laughed. “Lactose-intolerant?” he suggested. “Yeah, that. Never could say it.” They laughed and ate the sandwiches together, before moving over to the door and leaving for the base. After another walk, this time only 2 miles, they arrived at the base. It was a building no bigger than the one he’d left, with large windows, but curtains drawn behind them. The door was standard enough, except for the number pad next to it. Stealth typed in a code and they walked inside to find the interior shockingly similar to the other house that he’d left. They walked into the main room of the house, and Matt saw that there were three boys and a girl already at the house. Stealth introduced them separately as Instinct, Gain, Fury and Patience. Instinct was the girl, she was 23 years old and she had her scar on the inside of her left leg. She saw Matt was still bleeding from his leg and took him to the kitchen to tend to his leg properly. As she dragged him in, she explained that she used to be a nurse before coming to the warriors, but the pay wasn’t very good anyway. She removed the homemade bandage which had held quite well considering the fact that Matt had applied it in a hurry, then reached into the highest cupboard and pulled out a jar about the size of his fist which contained a white liquid. “Cell hyprose” She explained, seeing Matt’s puzzled look “Put this on a cut and it speeds up cell activity, healing the wound naturally and completely heals itself. You still keep the scar though” she added. She poured a small drop of the liquid onto his cut, and as soon as the liquid touched the wound Matt felt a burn of pain and instantly reached for it, but Instinct grabbed his hands and stopped him. “I’m sorry, I forgot to mention it would hurt, that is the drawback of using Cell hyprose.” She said, half sarcastically. About a minute of stinging pain later, the gash had closed up, and it formed into a scar. Instinct took him back into the other room and he noticed another girl had made it here. “OK Matt, now Influence is here we can start” said the oldest of the three male members, Fury. Fury was 19 and well built. He had short cut brown hair, and eyes to match. He was the sort of person who Matt had the distinct feeling that this was not their first meeting. He stood as he spoke and he was much taller than Instinct, the oldest member of the group. He signalled to a door on his right, and a door opened seemingly on its own accord. The other members of the group walked towards it so Matt followed. The 7 of them walked in together and Matt saw that it held 12 glass podiums, 9 of them with a weapon in. He recognised Stealth’s bow in one of them and realised he must have put it back in here when Matt was with Instinct. Each of the weapons was magnificently crafted from many different materials by a talented hand. The bow that he’d seen Stealth use had carvings of a coyote on it and Matt wondered if Stealth had done them himself or they were there from the moment the elegant weapon was crafted. He saw in one of the podiums, not one sword but two half length ones, about the same length as the pole he’d used against Kev two years ago when he was so close to death, and the stick he’d wielded against his unknown attacker in the park just a day before that moment. He walked up to these and admired them and their beauty. He saw that the entire of each blade was made from metal, but the handle and the blade itself were two completely different ones. The handle was a gold colour, the blade was a shiny metallic silvery colour and both handle and blade were polished to shimmering finish. He tapped on the glass of the podium, and as soon as he did so the lights died out. There was a deadly silence and he called out for the warriors. “Stealth?” “Instinct?” “Anybody there?” No-one responded and he started to grow very eerie of his surroundings, but just as he readjusted his eyes to the darkness, the lights flicked back on, and he was blinded for a few seconds. He was alone, but as soon as he realised it, Kaman was with him at his side and at this moment he felt more connected to her than ever, as if she was becoming real, as if the bond between human and anisma was finally secure. He heard footsteps behind him and instinctively knew that they weren’t friendly footsteps. He reached for the swords in the podium, smashing his fists through the glass to get them. He picked them up, one in each hand. He turned and held one behind his back and the other in front of him blade facing upwards. At that moment Kaman jumped to his shoulder, Teeth and claws bared, ready to fight. He felt her weight on his shoulder and nearly lost his concentration. Was she real? The footsteps grew closer and Matt stood prepared, facing the direction of the sound. He stepped forwards and a figure formed in front of him. Matt took the front sword and dug it through the chin of the creature, just as Kaman jumped from his shoulder in more of a heroic leap than a jump and landed on a figure which formed behind the first one, digging her teeth in to it. Matt brought his second sword around to find a home in the creature’s chest. He stood back and Kaman climbed up to his shoulder. They stepped away from the creatures to see that they were not creatures at all, but simply dummies, filled with sand which now scattered on the floor around his feet. More footsteps came from behind him, but this time Matt did not turn as he had done with the first set. He knew they were the footsteps of the Warriors. This time instead he turned with his swords held down. He saw the 6 people there looking at him, more than that though, he saw 6 anismas looking too. 6 humans and 6 anismas were staring back at him, with smiles on their faces at the new addition to the group and his anisma. “Well done, Hope” said Stealth. * * * * * Matt, or as he was now known, Hope, was sitting talking to Joy two days later. Joy had been found fending off her attacker in London and had been bought here by Instinct, arriving just this morning. The other 6 were with them at base. Normally they would be out, searching the streets, disguised as normal people. They would look for the members of the group still missing, follow any servants of Rahn that they knew and hope that they’d lead them to one of the warriors. However there was only one left to find, so all the warriors were at the base, ready to discuss what they were going to do next. Matt had seen Joy somewhere before, but not wanting to be rude, he didn’t point it out to her, and simply spoke to her, trying to silently decipher where it was exactly that he’d seen her face. She was the only other one here that was his age, and he eventually found out that she was in fact younger than him by 3 months. Joy was telling Matt of how Instinct had found her in London, after she’d fought one of Rahn’s servants, and brought her here by train (much to Matt’s annoyance, as he’d had to walk). She also spoke of how her anisma too, had became flesh in the same room as Kaman had done, after she and Soyanamon had killed their “Attackers”. Soyanamon was her anisma’s name and he took the form of an Arctic Fox. His fur was a spectacular white, smooth in places, ragged in others, it made him look aggressive, but still well looked after, and he had an air of distinction about him that would threaten any unfriendly faces. He had a sophisticated voice and walked tall. Soyanamon was actually quite a friendly Fox once Matt had gotten to know him though, maybe you really couldn’t judge a book by its cover, or a Fox by its coat. Matt got it. It hit him out of the blue and he was stupid for not seeing it before. She had helped him. She was the girl who had stopped Kev from killing him two years ago. He never had any opportunity to thank her and now, in the middle of the conversation he just blurted it out. “Thank you” “What for?” said Joy, confused. “You saved my life and I never thanked you” Matt was shaking as he spoke. “Excuse me?” said Hailey, looking obviously confused, but Matt saw by the look in her face moments later that she had realised who he was too. “Why did you help me? Why did you help me, when no-one else would, when you knew he’d hurt you too, when you never even knew me?” asked Matt. “I helped you because no-one else would. I saw your pain and couldn’t bear it.” There was an awkward silence, and Matt tried to find another conversation starter. He looked at the scar on her neck and noticed that it was not one straight cut as the others and his had been, but it was three. It looked as if an animal had scratched into her “Did yours happen in a dream too?” guessed Joy, noticing that Matt was looking at her scar. “Yeah, first I thought my mother did it but I found out that she didn’t do it, she did want to kill me that night though” “My parents were killed when Rahn’s men came to kill me. I was fighting the man who killed my dad when Instinct put her sword thorough his back” “My mother died trying to kill me, but my Father helped me escape. He died when they found me too, and I was fighting one of the shooters when one of Stealth’s arrows hit him.” “Do you think it happened to all of them? Losing a parent to Rahn” “I don’t know, but I don’t think its coincidence that our stories are so similar either.” “So what happens now?” asked Joy. “I don’t know” At this point Stealth walked past and found it appropriate to join the conversation. “You two seem to be getting acquainted nicely” he said. “Yes we are” they both agreed. There was a short laugh from the both of them. “Stealth?” said Matt “What do we do now?” “Nothing” came the reply “it’s all we can do until we find Sorrow” “So we just wait?” “Yes, unfortunately, we just wait” “Can’t you do anything?” asked Joy “Don’t you have any idea where Sorrow might be?” “No, plainly and simply we don’t. We have that prophecy which Instinct and myself found two years ago, which was written in a forgotten tongue, but we have managed to interpret a small section of it. _A group shall form of warriors of the past, assisted in battle, an ancient recent marking deep in the flesh, engraved by invisible hands and on instinct shall slay the inanimate by cause of age-old metal, thus claim a name and take on fate_” “So what happens when we do find Sorrow?” asked Matt, after a short period of silence Stealth paused before answering “We fight” After that Stealth left and Matt and Joy continued their conversation. Matt looked at Joy again, taking time to take in the finer details. She had long black hair that reached down to her waist. Her eyes were a deep, beautiful shade of green and Matt felt her looking at him too, noticing his features ad he was noticing hers. He looked into her eyes and for a moment she looked back into his. She stood up, not really wanting to look away from him but she was tired and simply said “I’m going up to bed, Goodnight Matt” “Goodnight Joy” He said back to her She looked back, once again into his eyes and said “Call me Hailey“ | |||
