OM AMRITESWARIYAI NAMAH (SALUTATIONS TO THE IMMORTAL GODDESS)

On the 27th of March I received darshan (blessing) from Amma
(Mata Amritanandamayi), a holy woman from Kerala in India who
was touring Malaysia. She is affectionately known as ‘The Queen of
Hugs’. Amma has spent most of her life travelling the world offering
her message of love and compassion. And bestowing an estimated 30
million hugs and blessings. She has also created a vast network of charities
for the poor. You may have seen a Louis Theroux TV programme about
her. The experience was very moving and emotional, and I was quite
touched. I think I was the only Westerner there, apart from the helpers,
amongst thousands. The 27th is quite an auspicious day for me. I was
born on the 27th, so was Amma - she is exactly one year older than me.
I left the UK on the 27th and now the blessing.
And when I went to the KL Tower the lift girl remembered me - it’s
amazing how people’s faces lit up when I mentioned Amma. You can
go to Amma’s website for more information - it’s very good. A couple
of interesting sayings - “You cannot change the direction of the wind. But
you can change the way you set the sails.” And, “Anger is like a knife that
is sharp at both ends - it injures both the victim and the assailant.” And
something I saw written in the Reggae Bar in KL. “Yesterday is History.
Tomorrow is Mystery. Today is a Gift. That’s why they call it the Present.”
On the way back to my hotel, minus my sandals which got lost
in the mêlée, the Hindu taxi-driver was complaining about the state
of the nation. He wanted the British to come back. Didn’t Gandhi
say something like that? But I shall leave the final words to Amma
“Children, I need nothing from you except your burden of sorrows. Mother
is here to shoulder it.”
