A BALANCING ACT

At Mahazedi Paya I had to climb up the stupa in my bare feet
- the Burmese insisted. Women are not allowed to climb to the top at
all. God it was hot, but with a great view of all the other stupas in the
distance. No package tourists will be coming here, that’s for sure. So
many dogs (bitches) wandering around with huge elongated breasts
and nipples, from suckling all those pups no doubt. A guy with a huge
protuberance on his face was begging. Beggars, amputees and those
with physical deformities seemed more noticeable than elsewhere in S
E Asia, apart from Cambodia maybe. And more people staring vacantly
and aimlessly into space - I expect they have a horror story to tell at the
hands of Tatmadaw (the military junta).
Back in town I went to the ‘555’ restaurant - I wonder why ‘555’-
which had some rather peculiar specialities on the menu. ‘Goat fighting
balls’ - or goat testicles to you - would go nicely with the cockroaches
and cicadas. I’m sure I saw one woman eating them.
Actually I have a theory - 555 was Adolf Hitler’s membership
number to the German Workers’ Party or DAP (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei).
Could be a connection. I think it should be called the ‘666’
restaurant, don’t you? And early next morning I was woken by the call
to prayer - why do they always place mosques so near Western hotels?
There’s definitely a conspiracy going on here. And getting back to the
Old Bago Lady, some Burmese women don’t age very well - mainly the
effect of the sun, as exemplified by a wizened, wrinkled toothless old
crone smoking a cheroot. There are several cheroot factories in Bago.
By the way, Hitler hated smoking, just like me. And he was
vegetarian.
