| "When the light sweeps past run over to that wall. After that KEEP DOWN! Got it?" They nodded. "Alright, Makealabel, you go first, I'll go last." Tim lifted the hatch slightly and peered out. A searchlight swept over their hiding placee, making them feel horribly exposed. As soon as the beam passed Makealabel sprang out of the hole. Abi caught the trapdoor just before it clanged into place, giving them away. Makealabel meanwhile had skittered acrossthe rumble-strewn road and leapt behind the half ruined wall. The searchlight swept on. "Piece of cake." muttered Tim, rolling his eyes. "You're next Abi." She took her place under the hatch nervously. "Three. Two. One...GO!" Tim threw open the trapdoor, Abi jumped out and ran. She hopped nimbly over the wall just as the light ranged past. "Tara." said Tim, pointing to the hatch. With a backwards glance at Emily, who grinned and gave a thumbs up, Tara too climbed out and ran behind the wall. Abi reached up to pull her in. Tim groaned and muttered something like, "I though I said keep down!" Again the spotlight swooped past. Tim turned to Emily. "Your go." Emily gulped. "Err...right." Tim raised his eyebrows. "Are you scared?!" "NO!" "Alright then...GO!" She froze. "Oh for goodness' sake!" Tim clambered out and hauled Emily out of the hatch, then shoved her in the direction of the wall. The beam was edging closer. It was almost on top of them! Suddenly Tara popped up and yelled, "STOP, DROP AND ROLL!!" Just in time Emily and Tim threw themselves to the ground, rolling over and over to the wall. Abi and Tara reached out and pulled them to safety. "Not scared. Right." puffed Tim, out of breath. Emily looked determinedly in the other direction. Makealabel was bouncing up and down by a dark, narrow opening in the walls in front of them. "Come, come Tim! Come!" he squeaked. "Hang on Makealabel, let us get our breaths back." "Let you get your breath back more you mean!" scoffed Abi, eyebrows raised. Tim frowned, then got slowly to his feet. "Come on then, we'd better get going." "Where are we going exactly?" asked Tara as Tim led them into the alleyway. He didn't answer. "Come to think of it, who are you?" asked Emily. "I'm Tim." "Yeah, but who exactly are you?" "You'll find out later." The friends exchanged mystified looks. Evidently their rescuer wasn't about to tell them anything, and they trooped on in silence. The alley opened out onto a stree, whic was now little more than a line of derelict houses. The once neat gardens were overgrown, brambles and weeds running amok. Windows were cracked, sometimes even missing, and the rooms beyond were dark and grimy. The war had evidently hit this area hard. It was deserted now though. They crossed the road, stopping outside the most run-down house of all. Tim glanced at the girls, then knocked slowly on the door, three times. "Password?" demanded a rough voice from behind the door. Abi jumped. Tim leant closer to the door and whispered something indistinct. There was a pause, then the scrape of bolts being drawn back. The door swung opend and they were ushered into the dim hallway by a short, rather portly man. Half of his face was hidden by a large pair of glasses, the other half by a thick grey beard. "In Boy!" the man boomed, "Who are they?" he growled, glaring at the girls suspicously. "These are the people the Leader asked to see." said Tim. The trio tried the best to look harmless. "Very well. Take them through." barked the man, and turned back to the door, sliding numerous bolts and threading chains across. Shaking his head, Tim led them through a dingy and disused living room. Makealabel, who had been silent up until then, loped forward. "Can Makealabel go now Tim?" "Yeah, OK. But I might need you later." "Yes Tim." He turned to the girls. "Nice rescuing you misses." "Oh, bye Makealabel." said Emily. "Thank you for saving us!" Tara said, leaning down to give the creature a hug. "Yeah, thanks." added Abi. "Bye bye misses!" he squeaked, and hurried off. They heard the sounds of the grumpy doorman letting him out. "Come on." said Tim, heading through the room's second doorway. They followed. "Err...Tim?" said Emily. "This is the toilet." "Oh well done." said Tim sarcastically. "Yeah, sorry it isn't exactly a penthouse suite, but this is what we've got. You'll have to crowd in a bit." Wrinkling their noses at the smell they pushed forward into the tiny room. It was a tight fit; Emily had a rusty towel rail jabbing into her side, while Tara suddenly found herself rather intimate with a toilet roll. Abi had somehow managed to end up in the sink. From his perch on the the toilet cistern Tim called out, "Are we ready?" "Ready for what?" "Hold on tight!" came the reply, as Tim pulled the flush. | |||
