Secrets

It takes a lot of strength to keep your secrets.

I don’t mean the secrets of others, that they tell you in confidence. Those secrets are not easy to keep, but to keep your own is harder. To keep another’s secrets you will have them there, or the knowledge of them, to make telling a betrayal – but to tell your own, you need no permission. It’s only your strength that keeps you from telling.

But if you have a huge secret… a life-changing secret… and you can tell no-one…

It doesn’t matter how strong you are. Your secrets hurt you, because they burrow deep into your heart, and they create a hollow there, so that everything you do and say and feel is tainted by your secret. Sometimes they will push you and push you, so that one day you just give up, and tell. But the worst are those you can never tell.

People say there’s no such thing as a secret you can’t tell. They say it’s better to tell your secrets, even if it brings you hurt, than keep them in your heart where they never stop hurting. I don’t listen any more. I’ve heard it all before. There is such a thing as a secret you can’t tell. I should know. I have one.

I heard that secrets can hurt you. I was foolish enough to think that I could take the hurt, and now there’s no going back. They told me secrets can hurt you. I guess they forgot to tell me that secrets can break you.
