Colours

Three shadowy figure hurried along the street, keeping to the shadows.
"Hurry up you guys!" whispered Abi.
"Abi! This ladder's heavy you know!" hissed her friend Emily in reply.
"Come on! We're nearly there!" said Tara, the third of the trio.

They rounded a final corner, and there it was. At first glance it looked just like an ordinary lampost, stood in an ordinary side alley. That was because it was an ordinary lampost stood in an ordinary side alley. But to the girls it represented hope, freedom!

Working quickly, they propped the ladder against the post. Abi held it steady whilst Emily climbed up. At the top she pulled a screwdriver out of her pocket and began to unscrew the lid of the lamp.

Tara meanwhile was rummaging through the bag she had been carrying, pulling out jars and bottles, all containing powders. These she laid out carefully on the ground, in a well-practiced order.

Emily passed the lid down to Abi, who laid it carefully on the ground before turning to survey her friends. Their faces and dark clothes were bathed in an eerie orange glow from the lamp.

"Are we ready?" she asked.
Her friends nodded.
"On the count of three then. One. Two. THREE!"

They sprang into action. Tara twisted the lid off the first jar, then passed it to Abi, already grabbing another. Abi half passed, half threw the jar up to Emily, who tipped it into the lamp. A brillian green light flared, with white sparks fizzing around the centre. Emily almost stopped to gaze into it's depths, but there was no time for that. Abi was already holding out her hand for the next jar.

Powder after powder was tipped into the lamp, colour after colour flared. Blue, purple, red, yellow, orange. Sparks were flying, the light flaring. The surrounding buildings were awash with all the colours of the rainbow.

As the last jar was tipped in, the trio stood back to admire their handiwork.

"Wow."
As the colours played across their faces, they felt a supreme sense of joy. The thrill of rebellion coursed through them.

In an instant the moment was broken. Footsteps sounded in the street. The Grey Goo was coming...
