	Awaken

	Dougald slowly opens his heavy eyelids to be greeted by a blurry view of his sister’s long dark hair. Her perfect curls wind their way around the back of her oval skull to meet the dusty bed of rough earth. He blinks to clear the film from his eyes and rolls over attempting to get into a position that would help ease his aching back. Pains now shoot out of his body in places that were not previously sore. He continues to roll attempting to get into any position that was less painful but instead knocks into his sister who awakes in a noisy yelp. The loud piercing yelp reaches the worn ears of the other children who also wake up with angry groans. Tired, angry eyes turn on Dougald, who swiftly backs up against the cold, damp wall. The condensed sweat running down the walls penetrates his thin patched jacket and freezes the skeleton beneath. The red eyes of his siblings advance on the weak, shaking bones of young Dougald. Dougald tightly shuts his eyes awaiting the pain oh his sibling’s fists. Praying that his weak bones will withstand another beating. Shrinking to the floor Dougald lets out a small whimper. The tears fill eyes but still no pain. He opens his eyes to see his siblings gathered around the half opened doorway. Margaret stands with a red piece of paper in her right hand, tears running down her gaunt face.
