Enemy

No matter where I go your there
I can’t take a breath without you seizing the air
Like a shadow the heart is forced to bear
Or the gleam from the moon as it laughs at the earth

Even when I’ve climbed the highest mountain peak
You’ll knock me off, make a landslide out of the weak
I’ll try and I’ll try, just so hard to fly
But I’m snapped back from the sky by the noose you tie

Snow in the summer – that’s what you are
You’re the phantom of paradise – stabbing ice into the heart
When everything’s perfect and the sun turns up the heat
You persist still, snow growing strong leaving me with cold feet

A gentle breeze blows me, I feel secure and safe
In an instant there’s ash in the wind, you’re a dragon I can’t escape
I’m freed from prison, no crime could be found
Yet I stand in chains because you look on with a frown

A frown or a smile, it’s the very same from you
Because I struggle for scraps of what the blockade lets through
You had it all and you let it go still
I’m looking for salvation, why is that so against your will?

An angel has its demon and a diamond has its dud
If the diamonds still in the rough why drag it through the mud?
Having already lost its claim to a finger it would shine
A demon instead sparkles and desecrates the shrine

Hide enemies as friends – you learned this lesson
In your head I was something I’m not; outside you made me a blessing
You’d rub salt in the wounds – wounds already slow to heel
Then you flashed like a firefly and spun your highlight reel

I’ve reconciled, I’ve wiped the slate clean
So why unbalance the scales, throw dust on what’s been?
Your jibes and exclamation marks would fill a ravine
Well your punctuation is a paradox of a plight to be seen

It always comes up, brought back to me and you
A reflection in the water and what’s out of the blue
I’m letting it die, letting you fade at last
You lost out and now you’re forever in the past
