pacific haikus ~ excerpts

Remind me of the time :when
We were young
And I will show you how much alofa hurts.
__

As shadows dance
ripples
Across your dark skin
Tight lips in anger
That I tear with my desire
To kiss you.
To reach your tongue.
__

Death, the messanger
seems to know me better that I know my self
And I die a million deaths each day through loving you
__

I wonder,
If we knew then
What we know now
Would we have loved so ardently?
__

Tangaloa was God
Pilli was a lizard
Scared shitless was the woman who gave birth to the lizard child so she beat it to death
Still wrapped in her blood.
They said it had a tail and webbed green feet
__

the umu was so hot my face
was flushed
or was that because I saw you looking?
__

when we were children we visited mama
but we never got off the bus at her house.
Her big knee-length-panties were always on the clothes line.
__

Salevao is a red dog
that
follows
me
To ensure my safety.
I watch him watching me
and change the cd in my discman
__

sometimes
you gotta make waves to make a difference
small ripples don’t count

you've gotta throw big stones
to make a big splash!
__

solving my I-dent- ti-t cry -sez
is not easy.
I would like to get my malu done in Henna.
And eat surruah with palusami, dripping with coconut cream.
It is easier to love a man.
__

the earth is covered in grogmud puddles
soft and squishy:
beauty is a lighter shade of gray today
and asians who bleach their hair look like aliens
__

Today,
the sun is my lover.
Warming my bones from within,
Tempting the shadows into corners
And I languish in its kisses like a man
In a desert who has just found a well
__

deep rich voices echo like a touch
rumbling on a tabla
playing by dia light on diwali and your smile.
__

I am so sick of the political crisis
That I just want to drop a bomb on government house
sink nukulau and tell all politicians to fuck themselves.
if life were only that simple
__

there is no silence between us:
If there was, there would be hope.
There are in fact too many words.
That is the problem.
__

I fall asleep dreaming of you and awaken
With your name still on my lips.
They are moist remembering.
__

they said
uncle had come home
with the dead water-baby in his suit case.
At night we all heard the wailing.
After a month he died.
They found the bones of the child
buried
under his fale
__

the coconut trees line the shore
calling me back home to a land I have never known.
Isn't that strange?
__

My parents
buried
my umbilical cord
under
a coconut tree
The
tree
died.
__

I keep
my daughter's cords
in my jewellery box.
I am not sure what I am waiting for.
One day I will return it to them
when they are older and have no need for me.
__

Tell me again of love.
Of life in another time:
when children respected their elders
and everything was free.
__

lava
is
the
honey
that
flows
from
your
lips
when
you
speak.
__

the clouds spin around me
circling me in a frenzy that is both frightening and erotic.

I long for you.
__

our eyes meet for a long silent moment
before I fall asleep
to dream of the kiss that never happened.
