The spanish armada

The Spanish armada is a famous battle, which Elizabeth emerged victorious. Luck was on their side as England’s ships were faster and the Spanish ships that did get away ran into bad weather and little made it home. The battle is known mainly for the great speech Elizabeth give to those who are willing to give their life for Queen and country.

The speech was

“ Let tyrants fear. I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and goodwill in the loyal hearts and goodwill of my subjects; and therefore I am come amoungst you, as you see, at this time, not for my recreation and disport, but being resolved in the midst and heart of battle to live or die amoungst you all; to lay down for God, my kingdom and for my people, my honour and my blood, even in the dust. I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman: but I have the heart and stomach of a king – and a king of England too – and think it foul scorn that Parma or Spain or any prince of Europe should dare invade the borders of my realm….”

After that great victory tradigy struck. Elizabeth’s favourite Robert Dudley died. He worked hard organising the army although he remarried a woman called Lattice one of Elizabeth’s old Ladies in waiting he remained a close friend. He had a recurring fever. He was on his way to a health spa but died on the way. He wrote her a last letter and will which she kept by her bedside. He also left her jewels of emeralds, diamonds and a rope of 300 pearls. He was in a lot of dept and made Lattice pay it off.
