Who would take over

In 1562 Elizabeth came down with small pox and even though she recovered being so close to death’s door made everyone aware of the succession of the English throne. There were 4 claims the main one was Elizabeth cousin Mary queen of Scotts. In 1568 Mary fled to England after the Protestants revoked. She came to England for safety and Elizabeth imprisoned her for 19 years. Elizabeth was now in a dilemma as she could either kill he cousin and risk war with Spain or she could not kill her cousin and risk her own safety as many of Mary’s supporters tried to kill Elizabeth believing that Mary was the true queen of England as she had never been excluded from the succession. However a plot was formed which cost Mary her life it was called the Babingham plot. There was lots of Evidence against Mary and Elizabeth was forced to act. Elizabeth at the start could not bear to sign the warrant but eventually did and in 1587 Mary was beheaded.

Elizabeth was now 40 years old and it was her last chance to have a child. There was one marriage, which nearly went thought. It was with the Duke of Ongue of France. Although there was 20 years between them she really did fall for him however Robert Dudley was still her favourite and was against the marriage so it did not go ahead.
