Robert Dudley and Elizabeth were old childhood friends and he was the love of her life. She met him again when she was imprisoned in the tower over the Lady Jane Grey plot. He was forever her favourite. He was tall about 6ft 1 and he spoke his mind; he tried his luck but knew how far he could go. He was in charge of her horses and was knighted and given the title of the Earl of Leicester. However although they loved each other there was a reason why she could not marry him. Robert Dudley was married to Amy Robsart. Amy was found at the bottom of a flight of stairs and suspicion started to occur.

If Amy had died peacefully in her sleep Elizabeth would be free to marry him however circumstances made it difficult. Although they could not marry they remained close friends.
