| Elizabeth was born 7th September 1533. She had a very troubled childhood. Her father king Henry V111 was disappointed with her as he was expecting a boy to carry on the Tudor line. However her mother Anne Boleyn loved Elizabeth very much and ordered her expensive clothes made of white damask and satin and over her dresses she wore velvet coats of orange, black and russet on her head she wore caps of regal purple satin trimmed with gold. Detail on your clothes was very important as it symbolised status. When Elizabeth was 3 months old she had her own household at Hatfield. Mary, Elizabeth’s older half sister was made a lady in waiting to Elizabeth and Mary was humiliated. When Elizabeth was two and a half her mother Anne Boleyn was arrested and taken to the tower to be beheaded for adultery and treason. It is said that Elizabeth was at Greenwich Palace at the same time as her mother when her mother was arrested. After her mothers death Elizabeth like her sister was declared a “bastard” and excluded from the succession. By 1547 Henry V111 had died and Elizabeth’s 10-year-old brother Edward was to take over the throne. However he was too young to rule so a council of regency was put into place. Elizabeth now an orphan stayed with Catherine Parr (Her Fathers 6th and final wife). Catherine married Thomas Seymour an old love interest. Thomas moved into Catherine’s house and at night Elizabeth’s bed. Catherine then died in childbirth. There were then rumours that Elizabeth was pregnant with Thomas’s child and she planned to marry him. Elizabeth said it was “London Gossip”. To make things worse her brother would no longer receive her in court. At this point she seemed to be retracing the steps of her mother. Elizabeth was eventually received back in court. She was noticed by the way she dressed she dressed in black and white. When Edward died Mary took over the throne and executed those involved in a plot to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne. Mary soon got her name bloody Mary for burning Protestants at the stake. Elizabeth’s popularity got a big boost and plots started to form. | |||
