Standing Alone

She stands alone, her eyes a sea
Of thoughts of things she can never be
Wondering why she is so alone
How there can be a whole world she’s never known
Just waiting out there for her to find out
But she’s not interested in knowing about
A world where the hurt hides in the night
A world filled with hatred and evil and fright
A world where the kind is too little, too late
And all the people have signed their own fate
So in her own world of dreaming she will stand
And take the darkness by the hand
She’d prefer to stand alone than to stand with
The people with who she’ll never fit
Although her face is streaked with tears
She raises it proudly to face her fears
And the look in her wide, dark eyes
Reflects the fear she feels inside
Although she’s afraid, she’s known all along
That her heart sings a different song
To those who live in that world of hate
And in the end she will face a different fate
But she stands proud, away from them all
Waiting for her curtain call
Now she will stand, for a brand new day,
And all the hurt will just melt away
In the sunbeams of dawn, still alone she stands
But her fingers cling to invisible hands
She may be lost in dreams, but she knows who she is
And though you think her mad, let me tell you this:
She may be nothing like you at all
But she has the courage to stand alone at the final nightfall.
