His sister is called Ruth and his brothers are called Roy Ray and Hubert. His father, Elias, had a really bad temper, and would beat Walter almost every day.

He grew up in Marceline and Kansas City Missouri. Walt became interested in drawing at an early age, using soal on toilet paper as there wasn't very much paper available. Still, he began selling his first sketches to neighbours when he was only seven years old. At the age of sixteen, Walt was too young the military, so he joined the Red Cross and then travelled overseas to help out during the war.

After the war, he returned to Kansas City where he started a career as an advertising cartoonist. He created his first animated cartoons, and then he created a new way to combine live action with animation.
