Human Cannonballs
Cannonball acts began to appear at carnivals after the Civil War. The first recorded human cannonball act was in 1871, when the exotic and beautiful Zazel was shot into the air. The Human Cannonball was the most dangerous carnival stunt, killing half of all the people who tried. (Most who ran away to join the circus were given a whirl in the cannon chamber.) Zazel (née Rose Ritcher) didn’t last long. Within a year she broke her back and spent the rest of her life in an iron corset. In 1890, New York State passed the country’s first law prohibiting people to become human cannonballs.
From 1900-2000 there have been over 1.2 million amusement park related emergencies room injuries and 12,315 deaths.
