We had to give her her own web thing or there was going to be trouble. None of her opinions are reflective of the company.. seriously.
Calipo Theatre Company.
Calipo is a Drogheda based arts organisation that operates on three levels:
The award winning Calipo Theatre Company is one of Irelands most exciting and innovative producers of theatre. Recent successes include a run of the Irish Premier of "Chatroom" by Enda Walsh Dublin Fringe Festival and ‘Wunderkind’ by Darren Thornton (Project Dublin 06/Edinburgh Festival 07).
Calipo Pictures.
Calipo Pictures is the newest addition to Calipo’s creative stable. The company operates as a film and television production company. Recent successes include Frankie, an award winning short film and recipient of the European Academy Award for Best Short Film in 2008 and Love is the drug, the IFTA award winning series produced by Saffron films and directed by Darren Thornton.
Calipo Outreach.
A big part of Calipo’s identity is creating work for a younger audience; in keeping with this philosophy, the company has an extensive workshop programme in film and drama that the Calipo team facilitate with teenagers and young adults around the country.
Awards
Calipo was nominated for the Irish Times/ESB Theatre Awards in 1998/1999 for the productions of Love is the Drug and Xaviers. Calipo received a Civic award from Drogheda Borough Council in 2004 and won the Best

  • Calipo Outreach.

Calipo runs an extensive outreach programme in film production and drama for teenagers and young adults throughout the year. These programmes include:

    The sharp focus project
Sharp focus is a youth film production project. Teenagers collaborate with established film makers and screen writers to create their own short film which explores the groups’ experience of their community, and their identity within that community. The project happens annually and typically affords four youth groups from four different communities the opportunity to participate. There will be ten participants in each group. The project will begin with a residential where all the young people and all the film makers will spend a weekend together doing drama workshops facilitated by the Calipo team. Following on from this, each of the four screenwriters will spend a week with the young people in their respective communities, devising the story for the film. The screenwriter will then take these ideas and script a short film with characters for the young people to play, based on their discussions. The script is then handed over to the director who will spend a week rehearsing the film with the young people in their community, and then finally after rehearsals each of the four films will shoot for one week with a full professional crew. After the movies are cut there’s a black tie premiere for all of the participants, so the youth groups all get to see their movies on the big screen.

  • Calipo Pictures.

Calipo Pictures was founded on the success of the 2004 hit TV series Love is the drug. Adapted from the original Calipo stage play and directed by Calipo’s Artistic Director, Darren Thornton, the series was produced for RTE 2 by Saffron films. The shows success paved the way for Calipo to begin producing its own film and television in house.

In 2007 Calipo pictures produced its first solo short film ‘Frankie’. Since embarking on the festival circuit, Frankie has picked up major awards at many International festivals, including the Prix UIP award at the Berlin film festival, the audience award for best short film at the Los Angeles film festival, best Irish short at the Cork film festival and best director at the Kerry film festival.

In 2007 Calipo, with the assistance of the Louth county enterprise board, set up its own post-production studio, with a final cut pro digital on-line editing suite.

The company will now focus on producing Film, Television and music videos to the highest possible standards.

Recently Calipo produced two broadcast videos for singer-songwriter SJ McArdle – ‘Blood and bones’ and ‘Why?’ Both songs from his forthcoming new album, and are scheduled for release in the autumn of 08.

Calipo also has a number of TV and film projects at early stages of development.

  • Calipo Theatre Company.

The theatre company was first established in 1994 by Artistic director Darren Thornton. Since then the company has produced eighteen professional shows, including eight original works. Calipo prides itself on its ability to produce innovative contemporary plays for a young audience. Calipo’s core target audience is between the ages of 14 and 32.

Most recently Calipo has staged Chatroom by Enda Walsh.

Calipo proudly presented the Irish premiere of Enda Walsh’s critically acclaimed play in Smock Alley, Temple Bar, Dublin, this year from 8th-13th September.
Directed by Darren Thornton, it featured a spectacular cast of Irelands finest young actors including Chris Newman (Love is the Drug/Hollywood Trials), Sophie Jo Wasson (32A/The Clinic), Mark Butler (Song for a Raggy Boy) Conor MacNeill, Jill Harding and Roisin Murphy.

'A computer-age Lord of the Flies. The writing is taut, vivid, cool, scary and often funny.' The Times

'Calipo's construction of Chatroom makes for a thought provoking and compelling evening's entertainment. It is guaranteed to keep a young, and even not-so-young, audience logged on from start to finish.' - Sara Keating, Sunday Business Post.

'On a simply designed stage...Walsh's crackling dialogue carries the audience through a fresh and fast-paced look at the pack animal with acerbic commentary on the media's manipulation of today's teenagers.' - Emma Somers, Sunday Tribune.

'.. In Darren Thornton's assured production for Calipo Theatre Company, we're quickly plugged into a virtual zone. A transparent grid on the floor of the stage demarcates the six characters' seperate spaces, highlighting their isolation, while Sinead McKenna's lighting picks out the ones currently online' -**** Helen Meany, Irish Theatre Magazine

Look out for more news of Chatroom in 2009 at www.calipo.ie.
