  • Some notes on where the Sop player sits

Have you ever noticed how the soprano player is always located on the outside of the band, closest to the audience? This is good for many reasons:

    1. If there is a fire you can make it to the door in time instead of being toast like the BBbs.

    2. Nobody sits behind you honking in your e...

  • Brass Players' Real Rules of Behaviour

Always show up late for rehearsal. It lets the conductor know how much he needs you.
Don't practice too much ahead of time. You don't want to 'peak" too soon.

  • Brass Bands

Eb Soprano cornet - too loud, usually out of tune. Convinced she has the most difficult part in the band.
Principal cornet - conceited, uses too much vibrato.
Bumper Up - either thinks he would make a better principal, or hero worships the principal.
Third man down - loud brutal musical thug with lots of stamina and no finesse.
Fourth man down - like third man down, only louder and thicker!
Repiano cornet - waiting for a chance to play principal.
2nd cornet - hesitant, out of tune, but can play a bottom C
3rd cornets - loud, out of tune, but can play bottom G
Flugelhorn - plays flat. Can't decide whether to be a cornet or a horn
Solo horn: usually a girlie - irrespective of whether a male or female player
Tenor horns - can play a unison tone in tune if one of them is dead.
1st Baritone - useless player, out of tune all the time
2nd Baritone - even worse player. Only there to show what the first baritone could do if he tried
    2 Euphoniums - show-off and trainee show-off
1st trombone - steam driven. Rasps most of the time
2nd trombone - sloppy player, but can rasp even at pianissimo
Bass trombone - chainsaw with vibrato
Eb basses - look like two drunken farts
Bb basses: -sound like two drunken farts
Percussion - Have lots of noisy toys which must be used in the most inappropriate way possible. Must be totally incapable of producing a swing rhythm.
Conductor - devoid of musical ability that he thinks the above shower sounds good

Hey everyone. I write just now with a plea to all brass players who may read this. Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society is a small local orchestra who rehearse regularly, and play three concerts a year, with a variety of classical to modern music. Our brass section is a little sparse and could do with an injection of players. If anyone thinks they would be interested in joining up, we have two open rehearsals at Balwearie High School on 3rd and 10th June, 7.15 for 7.30 start. See our page for details, or with any questions! Thanks.

Buckhaven & Methil, Bob McDonald, 18
    Region: Scotland

Charioteers: The odd misfire in the cylinders on this chariot but a decent lap time is being stamped. Tigers lack a little bite but its neat and tidy driving right up to the line.

Pilgrims: The odd cough and splutter but the message is put across even if the tuning has gone Latin again.

Colosseum: Gladiators in kilts – plenty of McMaximus moments and some McDonalds ones too. They just about come out on top.

Overall: Not a bad Roman postcard – plenty to keep you interested for the right and wrong reasons at times.

Star player: Flugel – Louise Kroegler – Led her legion well.
