The 29/01/09 was a date that brings with it a few significant events, these being: the WWHS boy's first day back at school, Jaydon Davis' birthday, and last but not least, the first game back to 6 a side after the Christmas break.
The boys were looking to give Jaydon a birthday present win as they took on Sureway Employment on the white field. The game was sure to be a tough one, and everyone knew it. Sureway was a strong team, and combined with the intense heat and the low levels of fitness from eating perhaps a little too much during the Christmas festivities, it was sure to be a struggle.
But the Heroes had the skills to take it to SE.
The game started off tight, living up to the expectations. As in all the games of past, Quinn took the gloves in the first half, and continued to keep his slate clean, keeping out many shots that came his way. Eventually however, a ball snuck through past Quinn as he dived low to the left, beating his perfect record. Hogan's boys fought back hard but went into the half time break down 1 - 0. Heroes knew they had to get a couple back to stay in the game, and the effort showed, with great defense and then powerful counter attacks. Despite their efforts, Sureway was to strong and kept out the shots. Sureway struck again, gaining a second goal, but the heroes held their heads high and struggled on. Things went from bad to worse, when the Sureway Employment team cracked home another three goals to win the game 5 - 0.
The boys had played some good soccer, but the score stood and Heroes suffered their first loss of the season.
The heroes were dissapointed with the loss, and Jaydon had to settle for a post game cake provided by coach Pat Hogan. Doug Menzies is beginning to think about an impending nudie run if he doesn't score soon. However he showed some improvement this week by putting in a great cross to the birthday boy, who just missed a flying header. And he kicked the ball in the direction of the goals. Sort of.
The heroes will be looking to return to their previous form for the remainder of the season.
