Father 'broken' over missing son

A man was driven to try suicide because of worry about his son, who has been missing for 10 months, he admitted on the boy's 15th birthday.

Andrew Gosden went missing on 14 September 2007 after failing to turn up at school in Doncaster.

He took £200 from his bank account and was seen heading to London on a train. CCTV footage shows him at Kings Cross Station on the same day.

Kevin Gosden said he had spent 15 weeks in a psychiatric hospital.

Mr Gosden said the uncertainty about the safety and welfare of his missing son had proved an almost unbearable strain.

"A few months ago I got to the point where I was so despairing that I tried to take my own life," he said.

"I was then in a psychiatric hospital for 15 weeks.

"You say you'd give your right arm to have him back and I would mean it.

"I would give anything that I had to have him back, or at the very least just to know that he is OK."

On Thursday, the family laid out cards and presents for him at their Balby home and said they hoped his birthday might encourage him to get in touch.

Andrew's mother, Glenys, said: "We have made cards for him. My husband has spent many hours designing one and we've put special messages inside them.

"Our thoughts have been very much with him today but we have have had to carry on as best we can."

The charity Missing People has appealed for information.

Brian Cowan, charity spokesman, said: "We are extremely concerned for Andrew's well-being. We hope our appeal will lead to him being reunited with his family."

Andrew, who is 5ft 3in, of slim build with straight brown hair, was last seen wearing a black top, black jeans, trainers and was carrying a black bag with patches of rock bands on.
