"the psychology of fear"

There are certain things we believe in, be it ghosts or god, we are not as free in our mind as we may think. Last night I watched the subjects of my film, the so called "athletes", get very drunk and foolish. How they expect to perform to the best of their ability having partaken in such excess is a mystery to me. Perhaps they attempt to numb their anxiety with these intoxicants. I see weakness in them at these times. Weaknesses that I must uncover to reveal their motivation for their extreme pursuits. They are driven to this behaviour by forces unknown to them. I will continue my study and attempt to find the answers. Carlo

i think your missing the point... snowboarders arn't "athletes" as snowboarding isn't a competition of pure physical ability. Snowboarding is more personal - i would imagine that what drives professional snowboarders (and cirtainly drives me and my friends when we're boarding, although we're no-where near the level your "subjects" are) is the determination to improve, and push yourself to do things that used to seem completely impossible. I think your right about snowboarding being a relief - or an escape; for me its definitly an escape from reality (if you think about it, its actually a really abstract idea in the first place), and of course theres the adrenaline rush and the friendly competition and the social aspect. For me, one of the best things about snowboarding is just going out with mates and having a really good time pushing each other to do better, but being relaxed about it. These guys drinking isn't so much a weakness of mind, but more a fault of lifestyle.

| Since when did fear become the exclusive domain of "atheletes", and why would you want to conquer a survival mechanism which has not only allowed the Human species to continue but is directly responsible for you being here. How do you expect to conquer it anyway, what are you parameters for achieving this and what do you expect to be the result of conquering fear. The best times in my life have always been when I have had Fear as a companion and it's a cliche I know however I find the only sense of true awareness is acheived when you are terrified beyond thought and instinctive action is your response. Please bear in mind the only people who k now where The Edge is( save the U2 jokes) are those who have crossed it and they guys never come back. You my friend are on a fool's errand. | |||
