"Holding Up The Sky is the debut album from Juliana Meyer, an incredibly talented acoustic solo singer who's musical background is evident in the quality of her performance. Following the album's release in May of this year, Juliana has been nominated for two awards in the Top of the Ox awards this November – best solo artist and best original act. Certainly, the nomination is well deserved – the album is beautifully arranged, with each song playing its part in creating a dynamic and evocative collection of music. The album is a collection of calm yet powerful acoustic tracks, each paying tribute to the musical talents – vocal and instrumental – of this incredible artist. The opening track, Bridges, is my personal favourite – its slightly jazzy beat is more upbeat in comparison to some of the other tracks. The track reminds me of Dido, but frankly, I think Juliana's voice is far better. It is simply gorgeous: clear as crystal, expressive and compelling. The lyrics and melodies suit her perfectly, and her acoustic guitar complements the vocals perfectly, as do the strings that creep into the song later on. Bridges is such an empowering song, yet also so soothing – a gorgeous combination. Illusions is another jazzy blues number, but this time I think the track is more interesting musically. The rhythm is funky, and the backing is minimal – a simple guitar line – which gives Juliana a chance to showcase her voice once again. This track is further off the beaten pop track than Bridges, with a more distinctive beat and vocal style, which is great – there's a slight danger that you could write off this album as just another female solo artist, with no difference from the hundreds of others out there. But the eclectic styles of the songs suggests that here is someone with a lot of musical potential, and someone who isn't going to write just to fit in with what's pop at the moment. Despite the fact that each song has its own characteristic style the album comes together well, creating a peaceful, soothing musical envelope keep the harshness of the real world at bay for a while. Juliana's musical style is so relaxing that it's easy to find yourself carried off into a daydream by the gentle lyrics and haunting music. I'd expect Holding Up The Sky to appeal to a wide variety of people, especially those of you who enjoy slightly folksy acoustic music (like Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Laura Marling), and I'd recommend to anyone as an ideal album to chill out to. If anyone deserves a Top of the Ox award, it's got to be Juliana Meyer." Tuesday, October 30, 2007 ON BBC RADIO!
