| What is Airsoft? Airsoft is similar to paintballing, but much better. The guns used in airsoft look remarkably like real-world firearms. Airsoft began in Asia when a more realistic form of combat simulation was desired. Since then airsoft skirmish sites have opened up all over the world, with many in the UK. Airsoft combat simulation is as close to the real thing as you will ever want to get, unlike paintball the basis of airsoft is drawn from the real world, this explains why so many experienced 'softers will look like contemporary military forces, from many different areas of the world. About the Guns Airsoft guns fire a plastic BB of 6mm in diameter by the use of a small pump which delivers a measured amount of air behind the pellet. The pellet is then forced through a smooth-bore barrel towards its target. Most guns fire at 295 feet per second and leave a small bruise at worst (only at close range - 10m) Types of guns There are three main types of airsoft gun, these are spring, gas and AEG (automatic electric gun). Spring guns fire one pellet at a time, having to be manually recocked for each shot. They have a lower range than other modes of gun. Gas guns use compressed, CFC-free gas which delivers a higher range than a spring gun. In addition these can fire either semi-automatic or fully automatic depending on the model of the gun. Mostly these gas guns are semi-automatic pistols. Blowback pistols even go so far as to resemble the recoil of a real gun. AEG's are the most commonly used guns in airsoft and mainly resemble rifles and SMG's (sub-machine guns) firing in both semi and fully automatic mode. powered by a battery and electric motor, these guns usually provide a higher rate of fire and longer ranges than spring or gas rivals.
