Windows Vista: Game Off710 días hace

Now Vista is stable enough, i've been running my old apps under it. The new Games folder thing works well, and is a much nicer alternative than the horrible 'tweaked' Start Menu. I had to hack it again to get it to point to the right files, but otherwise its two double-clicks to games.

I've been noticing some issues though. Notably, the resources Vista gobbles are astronomical, and the inbuilt graphics don't help either. I'm getting performance around about the same as my old Pentium M Laptop (2005 spec) which really is unacceptable considering the power of this machine. I've also noticed issues with older games - Age of Empires jerks now and then, and the SEGA PC Games don't even run (I suspect they use WinG). However, Half-Life and Unreal Tourney work perfectly. Well, Half-Life is a bit annoying without proper support for an analogue gamepad (keyboard and mouse are too twitchy for me).

I've found by running Open-Source "iApps" instead of Microsoft ones (example: Pidgin instead of Windows Live Messenger) the system is much faster. Disabling the sidebar also helps, it seems. So I guess the key to a fast Windows Vista is mostly in fine tweaking.
