Only two cars finished, and they were from the same team. There were three rollovers during this race, 2 rollovers going to 15v Dion Mooney (one which he continued racing after, it was the second one who baked him) and one rollover going to 72c Campbell McManaway after a blocking attempt went sour. Finishing Places: 1: 17v Steve Guilford :2: 16v Kerry Podjursky Minor Semifinal 2: Hawkes Bay Hawkeyes (20) vs Great Britain Lions (165) Hawkes Bay failed to deliver their usual standard on Saturday night, as a few of their cars had trouble starting, and those that did start couldn't sustain powere for the race. This left them weakened against a full strength Lions side. As a direct result, the international visitors put the Hawkes Bay boys to shame with a 1-2-3 clean sweep finish. Finishing Places: 1: 03gb Stu Smith Jnr :2: 01gb Frankie Wainman Jnr :3: 04gb Mark Taylor Semifinal 1: Rotorua Rebels (35) vs Nelson Tigers (160) Dangerman 85n Dale Ewers had the sneaking suspicion that he was going to be the target for this semi and he was not wrong. The southern boys used their heads and switched to plan B, which involved 83n Brett Nicholls becoming the runner. Their efforts were rewarded, and Nicholls raced to the flag with Ewers and 81n Brendon Higgins successful in their roles as blockmen. This gave the Tigers their first title shot since 2006. Semifinal 2: Palmerston North Panthers (150) vs Stratford Scrappers (45) Of the 5 Panthers that raced on friday night, only four fronted for saturday night. Peter Rees was the absentee, with engine damage that required fixing all through the night on Friday night. Miers became the runner for the semi, with Bengston, Penn and Hemi playing at blocking. The Scrappers proved to be nothing but a speed bump on the way to the finals, with Palmerston North taking a 1-2 win over the highest Stratford car, 8s. Runoffs for 5th and 6th Wanganui vs Rotorua Placings: 38r, 35r, 14v Wanganui 6th Overall Rotorua 5th Overall for 3rd and 4th Great Britain vs Stratford Placings: 03gb, 686s, 02gb Stratford 4th Overall Great Britain 3rd Overall Final Palmerston North Panthers vs Nelson Tigers This proved to be an interesting battle, with more than just the title on the line. The Tigers (still smarting from a loss on their home track) were out for revenge. The injured Wayne Hemi did not feature in the final, and as Peter Rees' car was not up to standard before the final race, he took Hemi's place in the red Waka. However, it was not meant to be as the Waka came to a halt on the infield with engine damage. Shane Penn took running control of the race, with Bengston playing blocker for him. The Tigers came to realise who the runner was too late, and despite Dale Ewers' efforts, the Panthers easily sailed to victory. Final Placings: 9p Shane Penn, 85n Dale Ewers, 83n Brett Nicholls, 84n Shane Harwood, 8p Scott Miers. And so that conculdes the 2008/2009 Teams Champs for this year. Hope to see you all here again next year to see whether or not the Panthers can hold on for that extra year. Until next time, drive hard, drive safe. Mel | |||
