Top Tips for finding your dream job

1.Use job boards effectively. The objective of a jobs website like RecruitIreland.com is to help to make it as easy as possible for you to find a job so try to make use of the many services on offer. Register for job alerts so that you’ll be informed by email when a job you’re interested in becomes available. Set up an RSS feed for your own job search criteria, this will then do the search for you and save you completing the same searches over and over again. With the RSS feed relevant jobs will be delivered to you as soon as they are posted on the site.
You can also upload your CV and allow it to be viewed by prospective employers, this way they’ll contact you when they have a job they’d like to talk to you about.

2.Choose your applications carefully. You are likely to perform much better in an interview for a job that you really want, therefore try to only apply for roles that you are really interested in and that you are confident you can perform well in. This confidence will set you apart from much of the competition and ultimately win you the role.

3.The CV is not an excuse to list everything you have ever done under a set of predetermined headings. The purpose of a CV is to act as an initial communication (marketing material) and say to the potential employer “I can solve your problem” or “I’m the best person for the job”. Your CV must make an impact and sell you effectively to give you the opportunity to get the interview. With this in mind the organisation, the position and the job description should determine the content of your CV. You should take the time to tailor your CV to the organisation and the position and above all highlight the skills you have that match the needs of the organisation.

4.Be careful what you say on your social networking sites, increasingly employers are using the internet to research prospective candidates before inviting them for interview!!

5.Good Preparation is imperative. The return on your time invested into researching the organisation and the job can be the best paid work of your life. Find out all you can about the job and the organisation, use the internet to research the company and if you can, talk to people who know the job and organisation. RecruitIreland.com provides profiles on many of the employers that advertise on the website and the list of those is available in the “Who’s Recruiting” section.

6.Read the job description thoroughly and use this to anticipate the core competencies the recruiter is looking. You can then use this information to prepare a list of the questions you may be asked.
Do your research to find answers to the questions you may be asked, good answers should last between 30 seconds and two minutes, so answers should be only three bullet points or less. Next, practice, beg, bribe or threaten your nearest and dearest to act as interviewer and formally ask you the questions you have prepared and provide constructive feedback. Prepare answers that use real examples of how you demonstrate this competency in your current role.

7.Remember to smile at the interview. People hire people whom they like and we like to be smiled at, appropriately.

8.Dress to Impress - Your smile, CV and confidence are the only things that should stand out at an interview, having said that clothing says so much about us that you don’t want anyone getting the wrong impression before you have a chance to sell yourself. Here are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to interview attire, provided by Nichola Kinch of Limperts Academy of Design, a full list is available on the RecruitIreland.com website.

• Do wear immaculately cleaned and pressed garments.
• Do make sure your hands and nails are clean and manicured (men also)
• Do wear a crisp white shirt – they always look classic and fresh
• Do make sure your hair is clean and neatly trimmed or tied back, there is nothing worse than a nervous twitch of hair flicking in an interview!
• Don’t let your personality show too much through your clothes-leave that for after you get the job!
• Don’t over-do it on perfume or aftershave
• Don’t forget to polish your shoes
• Don’t wear bright colours or patterns, as your interviewer may have an aversion to a certain colour or style and inadvertently judge you on this.
• Ladies don’t wear brightly coloured make-up
• Don’t wear excessive jewellery, or jewellery that “jangles

9.Learn from experience. Immediately following an interview jot down some bullet points on where you feel you did well and where you feel you can improve. Use this in your preparation for your next interview. If you do not get offered the position, always ask for feedback as to why and use this information positively to improve your interview performance.

10.Finally, the interview process can be quite traumatic and one of the most important things to remember is that it’s not personal. Organisations tend to be looking for a very particular type of person that fits with their own organisational culture and requirements. Don’t take it as a personal insult that you do not fit with their needs, the job that you do not get may be the job that you should not have got.
