| "THE BIG GIG" 2009 COMPLETE PROGRAMME | 140 días hace | ||
Friday 17th July - Royal British Legion, ThursoProgramme 1: "MIXED SHORT FILMS"-1 (5+) Doors 7.20pm Feat, 7.35pm end 9.00pm Documentary & topical shorts. "MOTION" Robin Whenary's first of four entries to "The Big Gig" is a study of motion through simple every day objects. "ORIGIN OF THE LAST DIVE" A behind-the-scenes look at how Matt Jenkins became inspired to make, "The Last Dive", a movie about the former US Navy submarine the Batfish. "WWOOFING" Another entry from Robin Whenary highlighting organic farming methods through World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farming at Trevalon Farm Cornwall. "THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUND EFFECTS" Continuing look at the production of "The Last Dive" in which the difficult job of creating realistic sound effects is examined. "THE BOY, THE BIKE AND THE APPLE" Robin Whenary's third film, is another motion study in which a young boy has a chance encounter with an apple. "TOUR OF THE BATFISH" Matt Jenkins guides us through the Batfish submarine which is now on dry land and open to the public at a miletary museum in America. "SEEING" Robin Whenary's fourth film features the sights and sounds of a Devon summer as seen through the eyes of a 12 year old boy. "ODEON, EDINBURGH- END OF AN ERA" In 2003 the Odeon Cinema in Clerk Street, Edinburgh was closed down as Odeon moved to the revamped sight of the former ABC in Lothian Road. Film maker, Barrie Andrew captured this fasinating look behind the seens of the five screen cinema in the city centre. The cinema is a listed building and has had sketchy use since and now lies empty. Currently there is a major campaign to save and restore the old Odeon, formerly the New Victoria Cinema. Not just for movies, this 1930 cinema has played host to many famous bands including the Beatles. Barrie's film is a thurough tour of all the parts of the cinema that the public never see in this excellent featurette. "TOGETHER- AN AFRICAN SUCCESS" Ned Cordery continues his support of "The Big Gig" with a featurette documentary covering the work of the Kamuli Uganda Sustainable Livelihoods Project. Ned's films have won him many honours and he has great skill and experience as a movie maker. The film takes a close look at all aspects of the project and talks to the co-ordinators at Iowa State University, the support volenteers in the field and the people of Kamuli. Programme 2: "DRIFTWOOD" (18+) Doors 9.00pm Feat, 9.15pm end 10.30pm "CRIMSON" (18+) German student, 17 year old Lana Tannir's entry is a story about a girl who is haunted by the memories of the terrible crime she commited. The viewer is encouraged to answer the questions as to why the girl did such a thing. Was it jealousy, what was the impitus for her actions? The film stresses the themes relationships, delusions and appearance versus reality in this short but bloody melodrama. "DRIFTWOOD" The main feature in this programmes is a full length film from Pete Middleton. On a secluded country road just outside the desolate town of Drift a group of backpackers find an abandoned vehicle. The group are unsure what to do or what has happened to the cars' owner but when one of their group is brutaly beaten in front of them a disturbing and desparate bid to escape the lunatic killer begins. The film contains voilence from the opening scenes which some viewers may find disturbing. Stricktly no persons under 18 allowed, proof of age may be requested. Saturday 18th July - Royal British Legion, Thurso Programme 3: "MIXED SHORT FILMS"-2 (12+) Doors 3.00pm Feat, 3.15pm end 5.00pm Narrative shorts "THE LAST DIVE" Bradley Williams and Kim Williams star in Matt Jenkins short film. The captain wakes up aboard his vessel, the USS Batfish. With no sign of his crew he despartely searches the boat as the enemy closes in for the kill. "THE WISHING WELL"- Behind the scenes Film maker, Rod Maxwell spent over 2 years working on all the charactors needed for his movie in which he plays every one. See how he did it in this fasinating look behind the scenes. "MARK TV SPECIAL- St Petersburg" Mark Rigler thought he'd booked a holiday in St Petersburg USA only to find he'd booked for the Russian city instead. Here he takes us on a his travalogue through the pleasures and pitfalls of a holiday in the historic city. "CAITHNESS OLYMPICS 2008" Thurso High School pupil, Colin Stone continues his support with a light hearted sports short featuring various races and charactors all out for olympic gold. "BIOTECH 8" Austrailian musician and film maker, Alex Nakone continues his support for The Big Gig with a black comedy which highlights the wonder product, 'Biotech 8', that helps to get your workforce moving and drag the economy back on it's feet but is the product as innocent as it seems. Is a Genetically Modified Workforce really a good thing and more importantly, who's next? "IT'S HOT" Another comedy from Eddie Evans, one man's desparation to escape the heat wave, how hot is it? It's hot! "OVERTIME" By it's very title it may seem a little mundane, more so that the story takes place in an insurance office with several staff working overtime. Dave just wants to get on with it but Doug wants to play much to Dave's annoyance. The Jedi mind trick is one thing but when light sabers are drawn this is no ordinary insurance office. Is it light side or dark, find out which way the light sabers swing? This fun film has become very popular so much so that it's producer Geoff Harmer is now working on a sequel. "Overtime" also features original soundtrack by Martin Westlake. "THE WISHING WELL" Rod Maxwell's warm hearted and funny film about a single lady who in her middle years who yearns to find love. In visiting Chinatown she finds a wishing well and sees the possability to win her wish. Unfortunately various incidents prevent her penny from landing in the well. Along the way we meet lots of other charactors at the well but will the lady get her wish and find true love? Rod Maxwell plays all the charactors in this film. "CELESTE" Laurie Calvert returns to The BIg Gig with another CGI short in which Celeste seeks revenge for the death of her family, she hunts down their killers and has a deadly secret weapon to help her. "CSI CASTLETOWN" An ambitious featurette from Colin Stone rounds off this programme. Colin worked on this film over the winter months and filmed at several locations in Caithness and the Western Isles and even waited for snow to have the right conditions for parts of the story. "CSI Castletown is a well thought out story of murder and investigation. Programme 4: "THE MURDER GAME" (18+) Doors 6.05pm Reat, 6.20pm end 8.05pm "QUIRK OF FATE" This entry from Orkney Movie Group is about a young family man who works as a debt collector. His expectant wife is mugged and a local drug addict happens upon her but instead of helping, he steals her purse to feed his habit. As a result of her wounds she dies and her husband goes out to avenge her death but what kind of debt collector is he and who owes him money, questions that lead to a sting in the tail. "THE MURDER GAME" The main feature in this programme, Robert Harari's film is about a group of teenagers who regularly play "the Murder Game", a 'live' roll playing game in which one of the group has to murder the others while the rest have to figure out who the murderer is and stop the 'killings'. Unfortunately the parents don't like the game so they arrange to play at a lock-up storage fasility over night. However things take a horrible twist when it soon becomes apparent that a real killer is in the building with them. Stricktly no person under years admitted, proof of age may be requested. Programme 5: "BROTHERHOOD" (18+) Doors 8.05pm Feat, 8.20pm end 10.00pm Successful businessman, Robert Fury has just married but when his wife is kidnapped he has a life and death situation on his hands. To complicate matters, the only person he can turn to for help is his brother whom he disowned 3 years previously. A hard hitting full length feature from Douglas Mackin. Stricktly no persons under 18 years admitted, proof of age may be requested. Sunday 26th - Mackay's Hotel, Wick. Programme 1: "MIXED SHORT FILMS" (10+) Doors 3.00pm Feat, 3.15pm end 5.00pm Narrative shorts & Documentary "OUTAKES FROM THE OUTER RIM" A special look behind the scenes of a new "Star Wars" fanfilm, "Decendants Of Order 66" currently in post production. The German producers have traveled around the world filming at original Star Wars locations to get the authentic look. The special effects are amazing and the team have gone to great lengths to build impressive sets and recreate costumes and props for this labour of love. "A TROOPER'S DIARY" A light hearted video diary of an Imperial Stormtrooper visiting Mos Espa. "STARDESTROYER OPEN DAY" Having completed the incredible Star Destroyer set, the producers held an open day to allow families and children and opportunity to see the Imperial vessel first hand. "TATOINE- DESERT OF DREAMS" A short travelogue film of the producers journey into the Tunisian deserts to find the original sets for Mos Espa. "A JOURNEY TO KASHYYK" A second short travelogue as the team journey to locations used as Naboo. "STAR WARS- DESCENDANTS OF ORDER 66" - trailer Preview trailer for the full length film. "STAR WARS- HEART OF THE REBELLION" - trailer Preview trailer for another fanfilm from Linn Productions also to be shown in Caithness upon completion. "CAITHNESS OLYMPICS 2008" As in programme 3. Programme 2: "LOCAL TOPICAL FILMS" (5+) Doors 6.15pm Feature 6.30pm end 8.00pm "HOGMANAY 2008/09 THURSO" As it says 'on the tin' this film covers the Hogmanay street party celebration in Thurso. Filmed in Super-Panascreen. "CAITHNESS COLD WATER SURFING" Highlights and final of the O'Neill Coldwater Classic surf contest held at Thurso East in May this year. The event is the second heat of a five location tour which forms part of the World Qualifying Series. Rated a 6-Star contest it is the most important professional surfing competition in the UK and features in magazines around the world attracting professional surfers from as far as Hawai and Australia. Filmed in Super-Panascreen. "WICK HARBOUR 1975 & 1935" Cinema For Thurso Group dipped into it's archive material for the look back to two periods in time. Firstly with a recent aquisition of images from around 1975 some shots of the Cliff Road and Bridge Street are followed by views around the harbour with fishing boats' numbers highlighted. These scenes are folowed by stills from a home movie taken in 1935 featuring scenes of barrels being loaded aboard a boat. The original movie is then shown and includes local fishermen sewing nets and a brief glimpse of the fishing boat, "Argentum". All material shown has never been seen publically before. "RELAY FOR LIFE 2008- THURSO" Last years' highly successful fund-raiser held at Sir Georges Park, Thurso, is highlighted in this film. The Relay For LIfe event run by the local Cancer Research branch broke previous records for funds raised at this national event with over £110,000 in total. It is the first film made in Super-Panascreen, a special new extra wide film format used exclusively by Cinema For Thurso Group. "THE COASTERS" Hear the sound of one of Caithness's favourite country and western bands from the 1970's. A selection of archive images with music from the Coaster's 1974 album, 'Country Style'. VINTAGE VEHICLES" Caithness & Sutherland Vintage Vehicles Club celebrated it's 40th anniversary this year and CFT Group went out to film the event. Take a nostalgic look at the many wonderful vehicles of the past up to recent times. Filmed in Super-Panascreen. "NEW HORIZONS" When Thurso Town Hall closed prior to redevelopment CFT Group filmed around the building. In this film the cameras return to see the changes as Caithness Horizons opened to the public. "WICK GALA PARADE 2008" Revisit last years' Wick Gala parade with full coverage of floats, street walkers and prize- giving ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in this featurette.
