I spent the first two years of my life in Leicester, on the Netherhall estate, before my parents moved to Birstall in 1966. My first school was, Birstall Riverside Infant and Junior, and that was followed by Stonehill High School and Longslade Community College, all in my home 'village' of Birstall. At school I did enough to get through academically, but just had a passion for sport. I represented the school at rugby and athletics mainly, but would have a go at almost anything. I was also picked to represent Leicestershire Schools at rugby at school as well as athletics. My higher education was undertaken locally - I completed a BA (Hons) Public Administration degree at De Montfort University (Leicester Polytechnic at the time) in the years between 1983 and 1987, achieving a 2.1. During my industrial placement year, though, I worked for the Cheshire Family Practitioner Committee in Chester. I did a degree that I thought would best serve me in my choice to serve the local community by working in the public sector. I married Sarah in 1992 at Glenfield Methodist Church after we met at County Hall in 1990. We now live in Quorn with our 2 children. Before becoming an MP in the 1997 election, I used my Public Administration degree in the service of the local councils - I simply wanted to serve my local community and thought this was the best way! First I joined Leicester City Council in 1988 -where I worked in Urban Regeneration on the Inner Area Programme. I then moved to Recreation & Arts as a Project Officer - working with the voluntary sector projects. I joined Leicestershire County Council in 1990. I am one of 29 Labour and Co-op Party MPs in the House of Commons and actively promote the principles of co-operation, both locally and nationally, particularly in the field of economic development, credit unions and the Social Economy. I believe that ethical consumerism will play a vital role in the future and offers a viable alternative - a Third Way! I was able to play a key role in developing Supporters Direct whan I was a PPS in the Department of Culture Media & Sport. I Chaired East Midlands Sport - the Regional campaigning voice for Sport and recreation in the East Midlands between 2000 and 2003. I have a passion for sport and what it can achieve. I now am Chair of the Shadow Board of the County Sports Partnership for Leicestershire (2004-present). I Chair the National Stretegic Partnership for Volunteers in Sport - the umbrella organisation that speaks for Britains Sports Volunteers! I Chair the Sports Caucus in Parliament - the backbench voice for sport in government circles, as well as belonging to numerous All Party Grops related to sport. In Parliament I play regulalry for the rugby, football, cricket, tennis, hockey and swimming teams. In 2005 I became a Trustee for the National Energy Foundation. My membership of other societies includes: the Christian Socialist Movement, Amnesty International, the Campaign for Electoral Reform, Charnwood Racial Equality Council, Leicestershire Co-operative Society and UNISON (the public service union), for whom I was a departmental convener, Service Conditions Officer and conference delegate for a number of years. I am on the Council of Reference for a few charitable bodies where I have an interest - Sport Pursuit, the Oasis Trust, & Keep Time for Children for example. I also help at the 2nd Quorn Beavers on a Friday night as a helper. I sit on the Board of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, again another Charity, who raise the issue of Christian persecution around the world as well as Joshua Generation. These bodies have minimal time commitment, but allow me to be kept in touch with interest areas. I receive no payment or expenses from these bodies. I have been a speaker at Spring Harvest for the last few years - a national Christian festival held in Skegness and Minehead. I have written a book about Christian involvement in politics for Headway - "Engage or Escape". I also sat on the Evangelical Alliance 'Faith and Nation Commission' between 2002-2006. Locally I also help with a number of Charities - a Trustee of STEPS based in Shepshed; the Loughborough Building Society Community Awards Panel and the regional ME group. Finally, I am a keen sportsman - still playing rugby for a my local team - Birstall. I also enjoyed playing volleyball and tennis for local teams, but time does not allow this to happen as often as I would like. I was also Honory president of Loughborough Football Club for a time. As well as being a regular player for Birstall RFC I am also their President. On Friday evenings I turn myself into a Beaver Scout Leader - along with half a million other adults and young people across the UK who are members of The Scout Association. I strongly believe in the Aim of Scouting, which is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Beaver Scouts are for boys and girls aged 6-8. My role is to help them take part in a balanced programme and work towards Challenges and Activity Badges. There are opportunities to learn about themselves: explore their feelings and develop good habits of health and personal safety. They get to know people: finding out about those in their family, the family of Scouting, the local community and the wider world.

| promote air cadets more its like scouts and all that but much more specific and theres even less for kids to do in the ages 13-18 because they are still restricted by law and cadets offers a great way to have fun and relieve boredom, and its megaproductive, i got a BTEC in aviation studies in it the other day worth 4 GCSEs which is pretty worthwhile if you ask me | ||||

I am happy for people to post comments on the blog etc.. but I am sure you will appreciate I can only deal with replies to my own Loughborough constituents. I do personally read these comments and blogs and will post here regularly. However, most of my new posts go on my website and my updates go on facebook - because I can update these from my mobile phone.Cheers Andy Reed

Gald to put Christine right as she got EVERYTHING wrong in her post.the children at the school chose the project overseas not me - but glad they did at it shows more himanity than her. I don't drive a BMW & couldn't afford one anyway - I have a Rover 25 - how uncool is that. As always people don't understand MPs at all. Smoking ban in public places is great and I don't care that a minority still want to kill themselves and others. Fortunately the vast majority of the sensible public agree too

"...Smoking ban in public places is great.....Fortunately the vast majority of the sensible public agree too" Thats rubbish because if you people went out and asked the public what they thought about the smoking ban I GUARANTEE you that the 'minority' would be against it!. I dont recall being asked what I thought about it and why wasnt there a vote for it? this ban not only effects smokers who go for a night out but the businesses aswell. Pubs and clubs will be losing out big time on profits because while people are outside smoking they wont be inside buying drinks. They say the smoking ban was a success in Scotland but they didnt say anything about all the businesses that went under because of it and they were alot!. People have been smoking in pubs for years and noone complained, if people dont like smokey areas then bugger off somewhere else. Banning sales of cigaretts would have been better but then the government would lose billions so they took the wimps way out as usual!

"good for the health of the public what a crock of shit you will notice in time when places lose out over the ban and more ppl lose they jobs " as christines profile is private i shall have to take my argument with her on your blog(apologies andy) firstly i do smoke and its good as people inhale less smoke in an enclosed space.would u like to bring back smoking in shops, buses etc?plus i live in scotland we have had the smoking ban for over a year now and i still go to the same pubs.i am unaware of any one to lose their jobs. "now mr look at me im a stuck up get did you understand that " i presume u mean "git" instead of "get" i suppose banning drinking would also be good for the public health(less liver problems, drunk fights etc.) however i dont think that would work.also people can still smoke and when some1 has a pint it doesnt harm others around them where as smoking does(espically for the low paid bar staff).

So jack your a smoker and a drinker who agrees its wrong to do but you do it just the same ( i presume u means you ? ) if your going to use the queens english then use it before correcting people ) (stop drinking = less liver problems, drunk fights etc.) < but you drink (smoking harm others around them espically for the low paid bar staff). << so why work in a pub/club knowing people smoke ? if you did not like the sight of blood would you be Surgeon and work in a hospital ?? people chose what jobs to do and know the environment of the work place before hand whould i like to see smoking in shops, buses etc? my argument is about the ban in pubs/clubs where people enjoy a pint and smoke have been doing for years . like i said don't you think it should be upto the landlords to decide yes/no to allow smoking or not ? and why was it not put to a vote instead it was a a few upperclass snobs sat round and one said i know lets kick the public in the balls and ban smoking
