Rewards For Madeleine Info Top 2.5m
Updated: 17:23, Saturday May 12, 2007

A reward of 1.5m for the safe return of Madeleine McCann has been announced by the News Of The World newspaper - bringing the total to 2.5m.

The cash is the biggest ever newspaper rewardBusinessmen Sir Richard Branson and Sir Philip Green are among those offering the cash.

The reward is for information directly resulting in the safe return of the four-year-old who was abducted in Portugal nine days ago.

Showbusiness personalities and leading business figures, including BHS boss Sir Philip Green, Bill Kenwright and Sir Richard Branson, have joined together in an unprecedented show of support for the family.

Madeleine's father, Gerry McCann said: "Anything that can be done to publicise that Madeleine is missing and help with the search is very welcome."

Portuguese police have also endorsed the reward offer.

It comes after British businessman Stephen Winyard offered a 1m reward earlier this week.

The co-operation of the backers means this is biggest reward ever offered in a newspaper.

Pledges are still pouring into the reward fund - which will be paid out for the crucial piece of information that leads police to Madeleine.

Sir Philip Green, who matched the News of the World's 250,000 contribution, said: "My wife Tina and I have children, and anything we can do to help to bring this beautiful little girl back we will of course do without hesitation.

"We are praying for Madeleine's safe return and can't imagine what Kate and Gerry are going through at the moment.

Madeleine was snatched from her parents' Portuguese holiday apartment in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz on Thursday May 3.

The offer is subject to standard News of the World reward offer conditions.

Anyone with information should contact:

Penetrating The Portugeuse Police
Updated: 15:53, Saturday May 12, 2007

Sky Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt relies a lot on cultivating sources for his exclusive reports.
But in Portugal, he's finding it not so easy to penetrate the Portuguese police.

Martin Brunt"Sky sources" are a bit thin on the ground here in the Algarve.

There's no sidling up to a friendly cop for a quick natter away from the cameras. No slipping off for a cappuccino and an off-the-record chat...or "guidance" as we call it.

So I really don't know if the police have any real idea what happened to Madeleine McCann. I suspect they don't.

I'm having to rely for information on the local Portuguese press whose accuracy is sometimes highly questionable.

One paper seems to have good contacts. The rest of the stuff is best described as "culhoes".

In neighbouring Spain that would be "cojones".

Each morning, with the help of a translator, I have to pick my way through the minefield of flyers.

At breakfast time, I can get away with attributing the stories to the local papers. Later I try to turn them into fact.

I imagine somebody has the unenviable task of doing much the same for Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate.

The couple must sometimes despair at the media interest, but they know we are their best hope in finding witnesses.

The police are doing nothing to appeal for the public's help.

They continue to hide behind the country's secrecy law, which even prevented them from issuing a description of the clothes Madeleine was wearing.

It's the law, but that doesn't make it right.

There's a feeling that law will be repealed after being held up to so much global ridicule.

One morning Gerry and Kate McCann told a colleague of mine "Please, it's Madeleine, not Maddy."

We've all been guilty of that.

They've lost their daughter once, they don't want her taken and renamed by the media.

Madeleine Police Hunt Van Driver
Updated: 11:57, Saturday May 12, 2007

Police hunting for Madeleine McCann are looking for the driver of a small white van, Sky News can reveal.

Missing: Madeleine McCannCrime correspondent Martin Brunt said cops want to speak to a man who was spotted near the holiday apartment in Praia da Luz around the time the four-year-old vanished nine days ago.

"We don't know how significant it is, but there are several reports of a man hanging around the apartment on the day she disappeared or perhaps the day before," he said.

"One report suggests he was sitting in a small, white van. Police have got a good description of the man: about 5ft 8in tall, between 30 and 35, not Portuguese according to one of the witnesses, wearing a blue jacket and white trousers."

Distraught: Madeleine's parentsHe said police had produced an e-fit of the suspect which they had been showing to people inside the apartment block in an attempt to jog their memories.

He added that police are also keen to trace an American man who lives in the village but who has not been seen for several days - and who also drives a white van.

Earlier, Madeleine's parents appealed for people to redouble their efforts to find her on the day they should have been celebrating her fourth birthday.

Gerry and Kate McCann said in a statement: "Please keep looking, please keep praying, please bring Madeleine home."

The service in GlasgowThey added that the support being offered to them on a daily basis and the "huge amount of effort and resource" being put into the hunt for her were "what keep us strong and... give us hope".

Prayers are being said and vigils kept both in the UK and Portugal for the youngster.

Hundreds of people attended a church service for her at St Andrew's Catholic Cathedral in Glasgow.

Madeleine's father, Gerry, is from the city, and Celtic players will wear yellow armbands in sympathy for the family's plight when they play Aberdeen.

Last night, her parents were honoured with spontaneous applause by villagers after a packed late night vigil at the village church at Praia da Luz.

Appeal: David BeckhamHer family have asked that residents in their home town of Rothley, Leicestershire, do not celebrate Madeleine's fourth birthday.

They requested that plans for a party be put on hold until she is found and returns home - but a birthday prayer vigil is set to take place tonight.

Family friends have also released balloons in nearby Queniborough bearing personal messages of love, hope and support for Madeleine and her family.

The possibility that she was snatched by kidnappers who took her out of Portugal and into Spain has galvanised support from the expatriate community there.

Some 40,000 people have downloaded posters of the four-year-old from the Sky News website and put them on public display.

CCTV footage of a woman and two men with a girl matching Madeleine's description at a nearby petrol station is being analysed by police. Their car had British number plates.

Meanwhile, David Beckham has appealed for the safe return of the youngster.

And British businessman Stephen Winyard has offered a 1m reward to anyone with information leading to her return.

Pics of Madeleine's Pyjamas Released
Updated: 20:14, Thursday May 10, 2007

Police in Portugal have released photographs of the pyjamas similar to those worn by Madeleine McCann on the night she went missing.

Madeleine McCann's pyjamasThe pictures show Madeleine's pink short-sleeved top complete with a picture of a sleeping blue 'Eeyore' donkey.

The trousers are white and speckled.

Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa also said police had re-interviewed the family of the three-year-old.

But he stressed there was "no suspicion upon them".

Chief Insp Sousa was speaking at a press conference in Portugal.

He confirmed CCTV from several locations was being looked at.

But he said no arrests have been made in the case, and the statement added that "countless" hypotheses flowing out of information which has arrived each day continued to be checked.

It was thought that a major announcement was going to be made.

Madeleine's parents had been taken to a station in Portimao while family liaison officers had been sent to family members in England.

Two further couples were also driven into the police station along with Bill Henderson, the British consul for the Algarve region.

Madeleine: Missing for one weekSky News correspondent Martin Brunt said Portuguese police were focusing on two men and a woman seen with a girl matching the three-year-old's description.

Brunt, who is in Portugal, said: "Things are happening, they could be important, there could be a big development.

"I'm also being told that a town or village has been sealed off near Seville in southern Spain. It is not a long journey to get from the Algarve across the border."

Officers have reportedly examined CCTV footage showing a girl fitting Madeleine's description with a woman and two men.

The footage was taken at a service station a few miles from the village of Praia da Luz a few days ago, on the road towards Spain.

The Portuguese newspaper, 24 Horas, said the woman was in her 40s, blonde and appeared foreign.

Brunt said police have shown a still from the CCTV to a British tourist who confirmed it showed a man he had to chase off from photographing his daughter.

Earlier, a special service was held in the village church at Praia Da Luz in Portugal to mark one week since Madeleine McCann was abducted.
