I consider myself a product of the 80's, both literally and figuratively. You see, I'm literally a product of the 80's given the fact that I was born in that decade, but I feel figuratively so because I have some kind of cosmic connection with that era.You see, I recently compiled a song playlist which I entitled 'awesome 80's' to fit in with my current obsession with classic rock. Let me detail the quality of this music if just but for a moment; think Nena, Alannah Myles, KISS, Rainbow, Survivor, T'pau and the inspiration for the blog title; Whitesnake. While listening to this, I happened to mention to a friend that the 80's were awesome. Quite rightly, albeit somewhat cynically, he noted that being 3 at the time (presumably calculated from some arbitrary date in the 80's), he didn't really know. The philistine..! The conversation proceeded; Just think pal, if you were a teenager in the 80's, you'd be walkin down the street in a full white suit, red tee-shirt and brown wicker shoes, listening to "Huey lewis and the news" on the way to see the premier of "back to the future." I found my point to be a valid one... You see, when I say "I'm a child of the 80's", I do so with an air of longing. Am I really a child of the 80's? I feel like an anachronistic anomaly; a relic of a bygone era somewhat incongruent with the 90's in which I was clearly reared. I want to live the good days of too much hairspray, 'miami vice' and 'Heart'. I mean, what did the 90's really have to offer us as children? Let's break this down. The 60's had the peace movement, woodstock, the cold war, peat necklaces and 'the byrds'. The 70's had night fever, flares, black lights, the bee-gees and Rocky! The 80's, on top of the things I've already mentioned, had white guitars, rolled up sleeves, 'Journey' and 'Rambo.' What did your average 90's kid get? Pokemon, Power Rangers, Camoflage print (maybe as a cultural backlash of the Gulf War...), Take That and 'Titanic'...awesome... Looking back at my days of embracing that 90's culture, I feel almost tainted. Perhaps that is somewhat harsh. My generation did get all the benefits that 90's had to offer... an altogether better standard of living, health care and education and the ability to walk down great victoria street in Belfast without playing "spot the incendiary device" (most of the time)... ...yet still, I can but fondly dream of that decade which eluded me be only a few years. | |||
