No Punk Intended Interview Courtesy of SoundChicks296 jours il y a

Interviewer: Shannon
Other SoundChicks: Grace M, Emma C, Anna C.

NPI:
Katherine = Lead Vocals
Claire = Keyboard/Guitar/Vocals
Chris = Drums
Jack = Bass
Seán = Guitar

Question one: How did ye come up with the name No Punk Intended?

Katherine & Claire: Ehhmm… It was during Transition Year at some point. It took us like all of TY because we didn’t know what we wanted to call it. We came up with all these crazy names like Pretty in Punk…
Katherine: Then one day we were going into Dunne’s Stores in Donegal and I was like No Punk Intended!
Claire: I was like yeeeeeahhhh that’s okay, for now, until we come with something better!
Both: And we never did!

Question two: How did you get into music?

Chris:I was bought bongo drums as a kid, and they were very nice, so I continued my quest in hitting things to produce a satisfactory thump.
Katherine: My mother used to sit me on the floor so I could listen to The Archers’ theme tune… Nah, my dad made me listen to The Doors when I was a small child and I didn’t listen to music then for about six years. When I came back to it I really liked The Doors and got into music through Linkin Park. Then I moved here and joined (local youth group) APA and we did drum lessons and guitar lessons and I met these guys!
Claire: I suppose I would have been crawling around a piano when I was about two – my mother’s a music teacher – so, that’s how!
Seán: Unlike Claire, there is no history of musical talent in my family, I’m the only one! I saw a band play at my first really local gig – a band called Wargarden http://www.bebo.com/wargarden - when I was about thirteen and I thought ‘Hey, I can do that’. At the time I was all into Nirvana and all that and I pretty much said I wanna be Kurt Cobain!
Jack: Right, my parents got me to take drums, then I did double bass and my friend Elliot got a guitar so I was like ‘Ah sure I’ll pick up a bass and we can start a band!’ (Jack and Chris’ other band are called Indium (www.bebo.com/indiumband)

Question three: What are yer influences as a group?

Katherine: Oh, collectively? We aren’t really influenced by one in particular.
Chris: We all have individual influences.
Katherine: Yeah, like they (the lads) bring grunge into the influences and we (herself and Claire) bring crazy kind of pop/rock indie stuff!

Question four: How long does it take you to write a full song and are ye all involved in the process?

Everyone: No!!!
Chris: Yeah we won’t answer the other part of the question like!
Katherine: What usually happens is…
Claire: Katherine writes lyrics…
Katherine: And I’m like Claire! Listen to this!
Claire: And she’s like ‘lalala’.
Katherine: And then Claire’s like ‘Well maybe we should do it THIS way…’ And then we do it that way and it sounds better. Then Christian is there, because Christian’s always there, so we jam with him. After that we’re like ‘Jack, can we go to your house?’ because Jack has a big house, and we can practice there. Then we invite Seán over…
Seán: I just turn up and learn the song!

Question five: What’s yer favourite song to play live?

Chris: NOT Lovecats!
Katherine & Seán: It was so much fun though!!
Seán: My favourite to play is probably ‘Nobody’ because I get to go mad!
Jack: I like ‘Boy Meets Girl…’
Seán: I have to sit on a STOOL for that.
Chris: I have good craic with every song…
Everyone: ‘Sixteen’. Yeah ‘Sixteen’... (someone hums the pian-y bit) We’re all happy with it.
Interviewer: Really? I would’ve thought ye’d say ‘Oregano’.
Everyone: Oregano!
Katherine: Well that’s really new, we’d never played it electrically before that (our Blastbeat gig).
Seán: We never even practiced it together!
Jack: We never practiced it together, we did separately.
Interviewer: Ye did very well considering!
Chris: Thank you!

Question six: If you could have written any song, what would it be?

Chris: In the history of the world? Awh deadly! I’d say it’s a toss up between ‘The Alphabet’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ because they’re the same tune.
Jack: I’d say that’s between ‘This is the place’ or ‘Porcelain’ by Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Katherine: Probably ‘Limp’ by Fiona Apple. Or ‘Dance With My Father’ because that song, I swear, it’s hypnotic. You always cry, it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve heard it. And it’s like, it’s not even that great a song, so yeah…that one…!
Claire: Ehhmm… anything by the Script.
Jack: She doesn’t mean it, she’s on drugs!
Interviewer: What’s wrong with the Script?
Jack: Nothing, but it’s like saying ‘You know what song I wanna write? (Something by) Yin Yang Twins!’
Chris: Oh! You know what? I would have loved to have contributed to the lyrical genius of the Cha Cha Slide!
Katherine: You can’t even DO the Cha Cha Slide! Cuz I was like ‘Hey Christian come do the Cha Cha Slide’ and you were like ‘I don’t know it.’!
Claire: I go through like these phases with music, and this week it’s the Script!
Jack: Ok, Seán, which song would you like to have written?
Seán:That’s probably be a throw up between ‘Drive’ by Incubus – which is like my favourite song of all time – and ‘No Woman No Cry’ by Bob Marley.

Question seven: What do ye generally write about in your songs?

Seán: We don’t! *Points to Katherine and Claire* they do!
Katherine:Anything… Anything that I’m like ‘Yeah! I should write about that!’. Like, I might have a thought about lyrics and think ‘They’re brilliant, I’ll write a song about that’ and then I might not be able to think of anything else at the time. Then like, several months later I think of another good lyric and think I have to out it in there too.
Like, the line from ‘Sixteen’ – Your love interests aren’t as interested as the name suggests – was one I had for months in a really depressing and terrible, terrible song that I’d hidden away in a notebook somewhere and I just ripped it out of that and used it as a lyric for ‘Sixteen’!
So basically, whatever influences us at the time!

Question eight: What’s the best gig ye’ve ever played?

Chris: of two!
Jack: Ah no let them answer that cos they’ve played a good few gigs.
Katherine: I think last week’s…
Katherine & Claire: Yeah I think last week was the best.
Interviewer: Now, if we weren’t in the room what would the answer be?
Chris: No it was fun! Me and Chris played!
Interviewer: That was Chris Squared by the way.
Chris: Yeah!!

Question nine: if you could collaborate with any artist, alive or dead, who would it be?

Chris: Mad Season.
Katherine: Death Cab for Cutie
Jack: As an individual artist I’d say Tom Waits because I saw what he did with Les Claypool and Primus, but as a band… you know I’d still say Primus. Primus… or Primus yeah… I like Primus.
Everyone: So is that Primus yeah? Or is it Primus…?
Claire: This is gonna sound lame but I’d like to jam with…
Everyone: The Script!
Claire: No I do not want to jam with the Script! I’d like to jam with Alicia Keys…
Everyone: Alicia Keys? That’s cool.
Seán: Jeff Buckley… or Pearl Jam.
Chris: You could be the one on ‘Ten’ (Pearl Jam album) who played fire extinguisher and pepper shaker…
Jack: In that case I’d like to go with Slipknot and be the percussionist. The one who hits a keg with a baseball bat.

Question ten: Favourite album and why?

Jack: Antipop by Primus, because it has the maddest bass-lines and drum-lines, or Freaky Styley by RHCP.
Chris: Desert Sessions Volumes 9 & 10.
Katherine: ‘The Soft Parade’ – The Doors because it’s so crazy, it’s like waahhhh!
Claire: That’s a hard one, but I quite like ‘Rated R’ by Queens of the Stone Age.
Seán: This is gonna sound repetitive, but Jeff- Buckley – ‘Grace’. I love it to bits, It’s my favourite album of all time, I listen to it straight through. Either that or – I know they’re kinda newish – but something like Kings of Leon. ‘Aha Shake Heartbreak’ is a brilliant album.

Question eleven: If ye won the Lottery, what would you spend your fortune on?

Jack:I’d probably waste it all; it’d be gone straight away!
Chris: Buy a studio and so many drums I wouldn’t be able to hit them all!
Katherine:I would probably spend it all on publishing things that would never get published otherwise. I’d be like yeah, I’ve a crap book that I wrote when I was like, eleven, it’s only three pages long , no-one else would publish it! Probably go out clubbing... oh! And get a Chinese!!
Chris: Oh yeah, all the money in the world and I’d get a deadly Chinese!
Katherine: I’d probably spend it like repaying my student loans!
Interviewer: Claire?
Claire: Probably buy a club. And buy like loads of animals and have an animal sanctuary.
Seán:I would have myself chryogenically frozen!
Someone: or get yourself mummified!
Seán:...Mummified?! I’d probably just buy a massive studio and millions upon millions of guitars. Then get like a deadly house and call up MTV to tell them to put me on Cribs!
Katherine: Me and Chris would like to change ours. We’d buy footage of Seán being mummified and having his brain scooped out through his nose, while he was awake.
Seán: Collectively, if we got all the money in the world, we’d mummify me, video-tape it…

Interviewer: Oh! I thought of a good question! Who is the most annoying member of the band?
Seán: oh for god’s sake…
Everyone else: Seán!
