![]() Review The End Again - My Love is Dead By White Demon The debut album for Dundalk based band, The End Again, “My love is Dead” begins with a fizzle rather than a bang unfortunately enough. This is not to take away from the first track on the album, called “Identity”. As this is the first time I’d ever heard the band in any way or form this struck me as being important, since a debut album is the first impression they will make on a wider audience. The song would have appeared better in the middle of the album with possibly the song “Portrait” taking hold as an intro song to grab the listener from the outset. As is, the album contains track after track of fantastic song writing. In all aspects of the instrumentation I find the word “tasteful” sums up each area. The vocals are done in several styles throughout the album. At times they are reminiscent to Corey Taylors style in Stone Sour at times, and other times a slight touch of Mike Patton can be heard, for example on the song “My Life, My Love, My Sin”. My only point to make on the vocals is the tuning is flat on the song “Crawl”. It’s a pity really because it is a clever song but the tuning problem distracts from the clever use of rhythms up until approximately 2:10 into the song. For a band, who claims to be melodic, they prove it in their use of guitars. The guitarists don’t break any new ground here and don’t appear to aim for any wild virtuosity, but sound great throughout the album, consistent in their simplicity. The influence of bands such as Breaking Benjamin or Tool is evident in the rhythmic and textural use of the guitars rather than being all about “the riff”. I did find the bass was a little bit too low in the mix though for the sound they were aiming for. The drummer in my opinion sounded like he was holding back on the bass drum. In the song “There’s the Stare” he uses some triplets near the end that were badly needed in other songs to break up the continuous single beat. This could be mistaken for him not being as capable as he probably is. There are little gems here and there when listening through the album, but in songs where the tension is building that extra touch of aggression on the drums would have made all the difference for the energy. Good solid drumming but just needs loosen up and beat the hell out of the kit at times. A lot has to be said for the production on this album, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. The layering of instruments in the songs and all the tiny extras such as samples being used to enhance what is going on gives the album that level of professionalism that a debut album needs to stand out from the crowd. Over all I think this album does deserve to be given a good solid listening to. I know I enjoyed it and will continue to stick it on from time to time now that I’ve stuck it on my laptop.
