During the summer of 2007 in Northern Ireland, a group of four friends met online to play a game over the internet. They communicated with each other via trial webcam software supplied by a company called neXCorp. The company was about to create a presence within the country as a leading provider of telecommunications technologies, when something happened. During their initial session, the four friends began disappearing one at a time, and the footage was recovered from a damaged neXCorp satellite some time later. Nobody seems to have noticed that the people had disappeared – it was as if they never existed. The footage was then placed onto the internet by a mysterious figure known only as “v4ng4rd3”, and it contained two pieces of important information: • The address of the neXCorp website (http://www.nexcorp.co.uk), and • A four-word message embedded in the webcam titles – Distant Jeopardy Nearing Return. The neXCorp website had been incapacitated since that summer, but it contained a secret link to a broadcast by an enigmatic person… In March 2008, a mysterious figure known only as Gabriel, The Emissary Designate of the Nexus, started to transmit cryptic messages to the world, stating that an entity known as “The Fraternity” have been here for centuries, and that they are not to be trusted. He also stated that they are now “on the move”. Before he could tell the world anything else, his broadcast was intercepted, and The Fraternity of the Eternal Brotherhood dismissed the message as a hoax. Unknown to The Fraternity, the elite Nexus agent encoded a secret message in his first broadcast for such an eventuality. The secret message led viewers to another broadcast, where Gabriel informed the world that The Nexus had managed to acquire a secure forum on the back of the neXCorp website, which was located at http://www.nexcorp.co.uk/forum. This forum is highly important to The Nexus, as it is the one last secure place for its agents to communicate freely, telling the world of its fate. The Nexus forum administrator, known as NexAdmin, had heard rumours and whisperings of frustration with some of the active Nexus agents. The most horrifying news of all was that Gabriel had decided to divert from his mission, and instead abduct an acolyte from The Fraternity of the Eternal Brotherhood. The higher echelons within The Nexus, known as High Command, were not pleased, and encouraged Gabriel to continue with his mission of feeding information to the populace. Gabriel decided to take matters into his own hands, all the while stepping on the toes of another Nexus agent, The Custodian. News reached NexAdmin of the success of Gabriel’s mission, but it had its price: there was a rumour that Gabriel had been injured during the abduction, and that it was more serious than first believed. Gabriel was urged by High Command to hand his prisoner over to The Custodian for interrogation, as well as handing himself in for a medical screening, but he refused, instead adopting his own methods of deprogramming. The Custodian contacted Gabriel directly, to try to speak some sense into him, but again he refused. Gabriel’s future within The Nexus is now in doubt, as it seems he has become a renegade agent. Gabriel had started to feel the effects of his injuries incurred during the acolyte’s abduction, and so contacted NexAdmin, who informed him that in order to receive help, he had to relinquish his prisoner to The Custodian and hand himself in to The Nexus. Gabriel refused, and seemed determined to follow his path, whatever the cost. The Fraternity of the Eternal Brotherhood finally broke their silence, and demanded the release of the prisoner. They also made subtle hints about Gabriel’s fate, and it seemed that some sort of toxin had been introduced into his system during his self-appointed mission. Gabriel responded with his own message to all the people who did not approve of his methods. He showed live footage in the centre of Belfast of the prisoner’s identity – it was Robert Shephard, one of the missing from the released Webcam footage. Robert had been clearly beaten, a sign of Gabriel’s twisted deprogramming techniques. He was forced to read a message stating that he was sorry for his actions as a Fraternity acolyte, and that he was to train under Gabriel to become an instrument of The Nexus. Robert didn’t seem to surrender this information of his own accord, as another of Gabriel’s men was on hand to discipline the prisoner when he deviated from his script….. | |||
