Women Quotas in Politics1243 giorni fa

Meath East Young Fine Gael has sharply criticised the recent decision by the Fianna Fail party to impose a quota on the number of women running as Dáil candidates in general elections. “This decision is an insult to women everywhere. It is patronising to no end in that it says that to us that you are where you are because of your gender.” Said Claire Lynch, Social organiser for Young Fine Gael.

Matthew Bruton, Chairman of the branch also added “When the Fianna Fail party feels it needs to do this, you just know they are getting worried. In Meath East Young Fine Gael, we are a perfect example of how we simply don’t need quotas to encourage women into politics. Over 50% of our members are women, with exactly 5 out of our committee of 10 being women too. It is my honest belief that this is as a result of Fine Gael’s commitment to progressive policies across the board, which show that unlike our opponents we are not a ‘club for the boys’ “
