Some success in Suicide Awareness campaign1244 dni temu

Young Fine Gael for Meath East have expressed their delight in the success of their campaign to have measures introduced to prevent suicide in Ireland. “The recent publication of a ten year strategy to try to reduce the suicide rate in Ireland is as a result of the active campaigning of Young Fine Gael supported by the senior party on the issue.” Said Matthew Bruton, its Chairman in Meath East.

“We are delighted to see that our hard work has paid off. This campaign, launched only a few months ago shows the how in touch with the real issues Fine Gael are in this country. In the last 7 years 3156 people died by suicide. Unfortunately since 1997, the Department of Health’s mental health budget has been reduced from 11% of overall spend to 6.9% in 2005. Given that more than two thirds of people who die by suicide tell someone of their intention in the last week of their lives it is imperative that resources are provided to help them.”

“Young FG also remain hopeful that the new office will spend more on direct capital investment for areas such as tracking those who self harm or attempt suicide, and providing them with support, than is spent on administration.”
