Drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of heart disease in men... apparentlyIl y a 12 jours

Spanish research, involving more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women, found large quantities of alcohol could be even more beneficial for men. the same is not true for female drinkers.

Experts are critical, warning heavy drinking can increase the risk of other diseases, with alcohol responsible for 1.8 million deaths globally per year.

Spain, where the study happened, is a country with relatively high rates of alcohol consumption and low rates of coronary heart disease. The research involved men and women aged between 29 and 69, who were asked to document their lifetime drinking habits and followed for 10 years.

Crucially the research team claim to have eliminated the "sick abstainers" risk by differentiating between those who had never drunk and those whom ill-health had forced to quit. This has been used in the past to explain fewer heart-related deaths among drinkers on the basis that those who are unhealthy to start with are less likely to drink.

Does my bum look big in this?Il y a 20 jours

“I’m having a fat day...”, “I can’t eat that it’ll make me fat...”... sound familiar? Ever thought about where those thoughts come from? Well, over 100 published scientific studies have shown the bad effect that media images have on girls and guys.

Loads of these images have been changed to make models look thinner, younger, or more muscular. Most of us know that the media uses tricks to make people look better than they are but it can be hard to remember that when we feel bad about ourselves.

One Scottish MP has decided to do something about it. Jo Swinson has got loads of Academics to back a report on the impact of media images on Body image and behaviours. The report comes out against techniques like airbrushing and using ultra thin models. Let us know what you think by taking part in this week’s poll!

Kissing - a health risk?Il y a 35 jours

The Government has been urged to issue a public health warning on the danger of passing on swine flu by kissing. It was said that the guidance should cover "a two-cheek greeting".

The public health minister said "the department will not be issuing a public health warning of the risk of kissing".

She said that the risk of spreading flu could be reduced by “high standards of personal and respiratory hygiene" but did not specifically warn against kisses. She said people without symptoms should "continue their normal activities".

A busy Week Il y a 109 jours

Hey guys, it has been a really busy week got so much to catch you up on!!

Firstly my bowling date with Claire was really good. We both won a game and I even managed to score 3 strikes!! After bowling we went for a pizza and chatted away nearly missing the last bus home!

Last weekend was amazing me and the lads went up to Inverness camping. We stayed in a little campsite right next to Loch Ness. The weather, in true Scottish style was sunny one minute and poured down the next but we didn’t let that stop us. We went for a hike, a boat trip on the Loch and had a few barbeques. It was a right laugh although the midges were really annoying! I think Sone is already planning a trip for next year.

Sone’s party was yesterday- it was awesome!! Loads of people from school turned up and Sone was more chilled out this time. Claire couldn’t make it cos it was her mum’s birthday but we have arranged to do something tonight, not sure what yet :s.

And it is back to school this Wednesday boooo! I shouldn’t really complain because my summer has been brilliant fun!!!!

I’ll keep you posted

Results are in!! Il y a 116 jours

Well its true all the revising, stressing and hard work has paid off- I passed all my exams! I managed to get four 1s including one in history, so all those revision sessions with Claire must have helped! Now I can relax and enjoy the rest of the holidays. Sone didn’t get the grades he was hoping for and has decided to phone the Careers Scotland’s Exam Result helpline for some advice.

Me and my mates went canoeing last week it was great fun and got totally soaked.
I definitely want to go again or try another water sport. Also the lads are meeting tomorrow to try and arrange a weekend camping trip up to Inverness.

Everything is going really well with Claire. We are going bowling this evening which I’m excited about, although we’ll definitely need the bumpers up or I won’t score any points!

I’ll let know how it all goes.

Speak to you laterz

Hey guys, sorry for not writing my blog recently I’ve just been doing loads with the summer hols! I’ve been to London and the trip was great. Saw loads of things and beside my sister insisting that we go shopping loads it was great fun!

Now that I’m back and it’s the middle of the holidays I’m getting a wee bit bored. So, having listened to the adverts on the radio I’ve checked out www.youngscotwow.org to find out what free things to do in my area. I think I might do some street football and me and my mates are going to try canoeing which will be good for a laugh!

Things with Claire and me are going well… I’ll give you an update next week!

PARTY!!!Il y a 180 jours

Saturday’s party was immense! But let’s start last Friday with my “don’t panic it’s only a girl you’re besotted with” lesson!

So Sarah came over and told me to pick clothes that I thought were decent and she luckily agreed with the jeans and trainers but apparently wearing a football top to impress a girl isn’t the best idea! After much debate where I tried, and failed, to convince her that it was actually the best idea in the world we settled for a red t shirt. After that Sarah drilled in the following dating tips into me:

Be yourself
Keep the conversation easy – no rants!
Make sure you pay attention

Then I turned to my bro for some help, not deliberately but he kept asking why I was wanting some of his aftershave. I eventually caved in and he was like, oh wee bro’s going on a date! So he gave me pretty much the same advice but told me to make sure I enjoyed myself.

When I arrived to meet Claire I was well early and just a little nervous! By the time we went to the party it was in full flow. Sone had never had a party before so spent most of the time checking that everybody was having fun. He kept asking how it was going with Claire and the answer is it’s going well. Really well in fact because she’s agreed to go on a proper date with me next week!

Got my life back!!Il y a 188 jours

Done! That’s it over, the summer’s mine! No more exams, whoop whoop and get in there!!! Watching the Champions League Final tonight. My sis better not decide go in the huff cause we’re watching football.

I’ve got the party this weekend end so after yesterday’s exam I plucked up the courage to ask out Claire, or more correctly to invite her to my mate Sone’s party. She said yes and I’m going to meet her and walk her there.

Due to my somewhat non existent experience with girls I’ve enlisted the help of Sarah who stays in my street, is in quite a few classes and is practically a part of my family. She thinks it’s cute that I asked her out, I’m less bothered about the cuteness and really nervous I’m going to make a fool of myself!

Sarah has decided that lesson one is going to be making sure I don’t dress in my old jeans and t shirt, charming eh! So she’s coming round on Friday to tell me what to wear. She says it’s important to look good for Claire, show I’ve made a bit of an effort. She also keeps telling me to relax and be myself as that’s the person she likes.

I just hope it goes well!

On the Home Straight!Il y a 195 jours

Stress levels are beginning to go down a bit, although my wee sis is helping to bring them back up with her temper tantrums! Honestly, it’s really not that big a deal if her hair isn’t perfectly straight! Although apparently pointing this out to her makes no difference.

Well, throughout my exams I’ve been trying this 5 a day malarkey, healthy body, healthy mind and all that! Never know, it might make me get better exam results – well that’s my thinking anyway! I’m proud to say I’m probably averaging about 4 bits a day so I think I’m doing well. Here’s my tips on how to manage it:

Have a fruit juice with your corn flake/rice krispies/whatever you eat for breakfast. I eat rice krispies mainly cause they are tasty as!

For lunch have a bit of fruit (or two if you’re particularly keen) with your sandwiches and whatever else you have (I’m fairly partial to a packet of crisps but that’s not healthy by any stretch of the imagination so not advising you follow this part of my diet!)

For dinner/tea/evening meal (delete according to what you call it!) have two bit’s of veg with your dish. Can I point that potatoes don’t count as one of your five day!

That’s how I’ve managed it and I must admit I do feel better for it!

Going to and watch a little bit of telly before I start revising. Catch you next time!

P.S. the house party I was on about last week is a week and a bit away… still not asked Claire!
