iiNET BANDS FEATURE - THE BAYS344 dni temu

iiNET BANDS FEATURE - THE BAYS

Over the next few weeks we will be featuring different bands that are playing as part of iiNet Films Afloat at Darling Harbour. This is a series of free events where you can watch cult-classic films on an open-air screen whilst highly acclaimed musicians play live soundtracks.

This week we will be putting the spotlight on UK band The Bays, who will be performing a live improvised soundtrack of Tom Twyker's iconic 1998 film Run Lola Run.

Here are a few facts you may not know about The Bays:
- The band is renowned for improvising every performance and will play different styles of music depending on what they feel fits the atmosphere and the mood - you never know what you're going to get!
- The band first came together for a one-off gig in London in November 1999 - this was a great success and they were booked for more shows immediately.
- A typical set will include several different genres which will meld into each other as a continuous piece of music.
- The Bays have headlined several popular festivals including The Big Chill Festival and the dance tent at the Glastonbury Festival.
- The Bays have no intention of releasing any material in the immediate future, as what they do live is so unique and extraordinary, often feeding off the vibes given from the crowd
- Following on from the success of their sellout one month residency at The Jazz Café in Autumn 2005, The Bays have planned to establish rotating residencies across the UK, running the whole night with their live performances, Bays Soundsystem DJs and special guests.

Check out what inspiration The Bays will take from Run Lola Run at iiNet Films Afloat at Darling Harbour on January 14-15 at 8.30pm, for FREE.

BECK'S BAR ARTIST PROFILE 352 dni temu

Each week we’ll be profiling a different artist performing at Beck’s Festival Bar. The first cab off the rank includes DJ/producer extraordinaire Mr Scruff and British soul singer Alice Russell.

MR SCRUFF

Mr Scruff – a self-proclaimed dj, producer, cartoonist and tea drinker - is bound for Sydney Festival Beck’s Bar on January 12.

Did you know that Mr Scruff’s DJ name was inspired by his scruffy facial hair, as well as his trademark loose-lined drawing style?

Mr Scruff mixes a range of diverse sounds including soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, latin, African, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks and soundtracks.

Scruff’s first encounter mixing tracks was at the tender age of 12. Signed to Ninja Tune in 1998, Mr Scruff has since played with the likes of Roots Manuva, The Herbaliser, Dynamic Syncopation and Mixmaster Morris.

Scruff states that he is now in a position where he can play “a lot of esoteric and unusual music, as playing for the duration of the night enables me to create a very relaxed atmosphere, before increasing the energy levels at my own pace, taking in many kinds of music along the way.”

Mr Scruff has been recording in the studio for the last two years and 2008 has seen him release some new music. Tracks released this year include ‘Donkey Ride’, ‘Kalimba’, ‘Music Takes Me Up’, and most recently ‘Get On Down/Hold On’, along with a new 13 track album ‘Ninja Tuna’ including collaborations with Quantic, Danny Breaks, Alice Russell, Andreya Triana, Pete Simpson, Kaidi Tatham and Roots Manuva.

Mr Scruff will be playing with Katalyst, and Thief featuring Kathrin Deboer (Belleruche). Mr Scruff will be at Beck’s Festival Bar at Hyde Park Barracks on January 12 at 8.00pm.

ALICE RUSSELL

Vocalist Alice Russell is currently one of the UK’s hottest singers, and she will be performing at Sydney Festival Beck’s Bar on January 29.

Having grown up in an environment where she was constantly immersed in music, Alice sung in various choirs which provided her with a classical background. These musical roots then led her to pursue a career as a vocal singer. Her musical influences include Minnie Ripperton, Eva Cassidy, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Jill Scott.

Did you know that Alice has collaborated with Mr Scruff on the track ‘Music Takes Me Up’?

Alice’s first solo album, ‘Under the Munka Moon’ was released in 2004. She has recorded tracks with the Quantic and Quantic Soul Orchestra, Bah Samba and Kushti, and her style is often hard to pin-point, with musical commentators labelling it everything from funk, to gospel, to jazz and more. Alice, herself, has called her music soul music – “just because the stuff we do is quite real and raw, from the heart and from what we really love. So in that way, I call it soul music. Because soul music can be a bit of everything.”

Alice Russell will be playing with Mark De Clive-Lowe, Vanessa Freeman, Christine Eva, Mickey Morphingaz, and DJ Huwston. Alice Russell will be at Beck’s Festival Bar at Hyde Park Barracks on January 29 at 8pm.
