"The best place to be kept up to date with all things Godskitchen"

Spectrum head honcho, Pete Jordan talks to Godskitchenhace 311 días

1) Hi Pete, thanks for doing this interview, what have you been up to recently?

No problem. Recovering from a mental 2008, and just preparing for another hectic year full of DJ gigs, Spectrum events and whatever else comes up I guess. I’ve also been spending some time producing as well, which has been long overdue.

2) You are the promoter of Spectrum, tell us a little about it, how did it all come about?

It’s funny, I still don’t consider myself as a promoter. I was (and essential still am) just a DJ who decided to put on parties to try and showcase his own sound and put on the acts that I like. It all happened by accident 8 years ago in Nottingham, and it’s all gone from strength to strength. These days I effectively oversee the brand, rather than directly promoting it per se.

3) If you had to think of a favourite Spectrum memory from over the years, what would it be?

Man, that’s a hard question. As I’ve been so involved from the start, I’ve seen pretty much everything. From overseas tours, road blocked events with touts selling tickets for 5 times the value outside, to all kinds of inspirational performances and crowds. For me, the best times have come with me on the decks, controlling the party and loving the music along with the crowd.

4) Any embarrassing stories from over the years? Any dirt you want to dish on anyone? Any axes you want to grind? All in good taste of course, now’s your time……

I’ve seen some funny stuff – people doing odd things in clubs, DJs too, most I’d rather forget about. The worst thing is dealing with far too many acts who have lost a sense of reality and where they started out. Names? No chance, all publicity is good publicity for these acts who think that they are bigger than people who come to see them.

5) What have you got planned for Spectrum in 2009 then?

First big event is January 31st at Air, then February though to March sees us get on the road for our ‘8 Years in the Game’ tour. Hitting our regular haunts across the UK, plus a few special one off events. A couple of weekender events at Pontins in March, then onto the summer season. More overseas shows and a returnto a rather special festival in July, not to far from Birmingham! ;o ) The rest of the year, we’ll have to wait and see!

6) On a more personal note, what’s going on with you these days? Are you happy to concentrating on Spectrum or will we be seeing your name in lights in the near future too?

I think anybody who promotes events has to be happy to sit in the background a little, however as time has gone on, it’s become more difficult to just play the support role. The crowds keep getting bigger for each of my sets and stepping into the starring role seems to come naturally. I’m a totally different person when I’m DJing. Due to having a top team who work with me to push the brand, I’ve been able to focus more on my DJing, and more and more bookings seem to come all the time. I can’t lie that the intention is to keep going higher up the bill, yet I’m still very selective about where I play. I guess I’ve been spoilt with the amount of top events I’ve played at in the last few years.

7) Times change and things have moved on a lot in the UK dance scene in recent years, where do you see it going over the next few years?

I started going out to clubs in 1995 and I have seen a lot of the worldwide club scenes. As long as people are on this earth, they will want to go out and dance – simple as. Yes, trends and tastes change, but that’s half the fun of it. It you stick around for too long and don’t develop in a positive fashion then you quickly become a dinosaur. People who say it isn’t how it used to be are accepting the fact that they have gotten old and forgotten what it is like to approach each night with an open mind and ready to enjoy yourself.

8) If you could have any super power what would it be?

I would definitely want to be able to duplicate myself. There’s never enough time in the day to do everything I want to.

9) Who’s your favourite Girls Aloud member?

Ashley Cole

10) Finally, what can we all expect from the Spectrum crew on 31st January?

Well the customary top class and varied line up as ever. Herve’s debut set at Air, up and coming act Dolby Anol from Glasgow making their first ever Spectrum appearance. Spectrum residents, the hotly tipped Heavyfeet from Manchester return after a massive NYE set in Birmingham, and of course myself making sure Eric Prydz brings his A game in the main room. ;o )

Hope to see you there!

An Introduction to Eric Prydz.........hace 319 días

[IMG]http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...

ERIC PRYDZ IS ON A ROLL AT THE MOMENT, WITHOUT DOUBT LEADING THE WAY. HIS LABELS MOUSEVILLE, PRYDA, & PRYDA FRIENDS ARE POSITIVELY BRIMMING WITH UNDERGROUND CLUB HITS. ERIC IS NOW IN CHARGE OF THREE HIGHLY RESPECTED LABELS WHOSE RELEASES ARE IN FEVERISH DEMAND, CONSISTENTLY SELLING HUGE QUANTITIES OF VINYL WHICH IS TRULY INCREDIBLE IN THE MARKETS CURRENT CLIMATE. THE LABELS ARE ARGUABLY PROVING TO BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND FORWARD THINKING IMPRINTS CURRENTLY EXISTING.

Each label was strictly developed to give Eric a platform to release his own productions without outside interference, simply his music on his terms. It was important for Eric to step back after his previous successes and release music without schedules and pressure. Ultimately he wanted to control his own image & destiny, something extremely important to him and his career.

The ethos behind the labels was truly underground, scarcely any promotion, no press intrusion and true label/design identity… a formula which has proven massively successful!

[IMG]http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...

Releases on his more hard-edged Mouseville Records under the pseudonym Cirez D have been tough and powerful a throw back to the underground techno roots his native Sweden has become so famous for. The huge demand for this label has been nothing short of amazing with his massive ‘Knockout EP’ selling over 18,000 copies on vinyl alone. The more melodic based Pryda imprint showcases his early house influences with harmonies, melodies and hooks fused with his trademark powerful basslines. Pryda & Mouseville are solely for Eric’s own productions, vehicles to develop his sound a sound that has become so influential, constantly imitated and copied but yet to be bettered.

Therefore Pryda Friends was created to release friend’s productions as currently there was no other outlet for the growing list of tracks submitted to Eric by his close colleagues. Collaborations such as the hugely successful Paolo Mojo “1983” & Axer “123”/ “321” written with fellow Swede Axwell proved the worth of this new imprint.

Then just recently he became the first ever artist to be given the green light to sample Pink Floyd as his massive ‘Proper Education’ fused “Another Brick In The Wall’s” school choir chorus into a UK & European chart smash for Ministry of Sound. Eric has proven to be an artist that can actually fuse commercial success with underground success, something previously impossible to achieve and sustain.

It was always the enjoyment of working with music that kept Eric coming back for more. From making music on the piano aged 8 to convincing his parents to buy him a keyboard so he could make his own Depeche Mode tracks it was always “just a bit of fun.” However, with his debut artist album set to hit the world this summer, Eric’s key loves of house, techno and electro will see him bring all of his styles under one roof for the first time as his underground club roots come to the fore. A bonefide global chart smash in the making, it’s surprising just how far a bit of ‘fun’ can go.

[IMG]http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...

Going back to 1994 Eric became the drummer in a synth band called ‘Enemy Alliance’, touring Sweden and dreaming of becoming the next Kraftwerk. He jacked his job in, hooked up with two friends who had a small studio set up making more pop based material and lived the next two years virtually penniless - working on his own hard-hitting, techno-funk tracks and DJing locally when gigs came up.

Eric’s first release came about almost by accident. Having made a bunch of new material solely on a Roland MC-505 Groovebox he gave a cassette to a friend who ran a clothing store in Stockholm. Eventually finding its way to the London offices of EMI’s New Religion, in 2000 they released ‘By Your Side’/Mr. Jingles’ and Eric was at last on the hallowed grooves of black vinyl.

After the success of that initial release, EMI moved Eric to their flagship dance label Credence. A remix of the boogie bassline driven ‘Mr Jingles’ together with two new tracks followed and ‘EP1’ formed the first of three hugely successful releases. By the time ‘EP3’ came around, Eric had developed into one of the hottest names in house music and the original version of ‘Slammin’ from EP3 became the biggest instrumental tune on Ibiza in the summer of 2003. As an in demand producer the remix offers were flying in. Defining moments like his work on fellow Swede Steve Angello’s ‘Voices’ & Woz Not Woz firmly established Eric’s trademark electronic sound and he went on to remix the likes of The Shapeshifter’s, Alter Ego, Pet Shop Boys and Switch to name but a few.

Then things went a bit crazy. A record that he made to play out for friends in Stockholm that sampled a vocal hook from Stevie Winwood’s ‘Valerie’ became a local club anthem off the back of just six dub plates. A year later in 2004 ‘Call On Me’ was out on Ministry of Sound’s Data imprint, topping half the national charts of Europe and remaining at number 1 for six weeks in the UK, generating sales of over 2.5 million units worldwide.

As Mouseville Records and Pryda Recordings continue to deliver the dancefloor goods, Eric Prydz is now one of the world’s most in demand underground spinners and producers. With is debut album and new single set to drop, the worlds of techno and house are in safe hands.

Interview with Sander van Doorn ahead of his appearance on Friday 22nd Augusthace 477 días

[IMG]http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5...

Pushing the boundaries of dance music is something that comes natural to Sander van Doorn. His relentless attitude to what he does is the core essence to his astonishing success, both as a DJ and as a world-class producer. Production after production, show after show, his reputation is one of flawless measure, and the best is still to come.

In just 4 years, and coming out of nowhere, Sander van Doorn is achieving stuff dreams are made of. Debuting in DJMag’s prestigious Top 100 poll at 32 in 2006 and then climbing 17 places to 15 in 2007 indicates the power and popularity of this man. ??Sander has clocked up more miles in 12 months than most, demolishing each and every dancefloor he commands over. New residencies at Judgement Sunday in Ibiza and at the Gallery in London put two big feathers in cap, and there are a few surprises to come next year. His ethos is simple and that is to please every crowd he comes in contact with.

[IMG]http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2...

If you haven’t heard of Grasshopper, King of My Castle, By Any Demand and Riff then you’re probably not in tune with dance music. Every van Doorn production of 2007 sent tidal waves through the electronic music industry with Djs from a multitude of genres slotting his work into their sets. Radio play of all four tracks was guaranteed, as were high chart positions, reaching the number one spot on more than one occasion. His remix of Sia’s ‘The Girl You Lost To Cocaine’ is the stuff classics are made of, and ‘The Bass’, the first single from Supernaturalistic is speaking for itself! 2008 is shaping up to be no different with Sander once again rocking dancefloors worldwide

Following on from his immensely popular set at GlobalGathering, Sander took time out of his extremely busy schedule to have a chat with us ahead of his appearance at Godskitchen in August.

Firstly let me just say thank you for sharing this time with us Sander. For those that don't already know, how would you descibe your style of music??
People try to pigeon-hole me into one genre of music but I would say I play somewhere between trance, tech-trance, house and techno!! DJ’s from all genres are playing my tracks too which is always a massive compliment. My tracks have been in a few of the recent essential mixes from DJ’s like Dirty South!

Have you any material you are working on for future release??
I am taking a break from the studio at the moment, August is all about dj’ing, festivals and Ibiza but I’ll be back in the studio in November so i hope to have some massive tunes to show for it by the end of 2008. In July I finished quiet a big remix but I can’t say anything about it yet, I have one or two new productions that I made back in July that have been working really well.

Who would you most like to collaborate with??
Well this year I collaborated with one of my all time heroes, Marco V which was amazing. We produced one track from his studio (which is out now on his label, In Charge) and one track that we produced from my studio. That is yet to be released… Keep your eye’s on Doorn records for it!

Sounds good! So as a DJ do you prefer playing festivals or at smaller club gigs??
I like both really. For example, you can’t beat the feeling of playing in front of 5 or 10 thousand people at a really great festival like Dance Valley or Global Gathering but you also can’t beat the atmosphere of a smaller club, something like when The Gallery was at Turnmills.

How would you describe your live dj sets in five words??
Oh… um… energetic, melodic, supernaturalistic, techy and um… fun!

Haha! Can't forget the fun. What do you enjoy most out of your live dj performances??
Seeing the crowds reaction and getting the responses when I drop my own productions.

List three things you can’t live without??
My car, my mac and my family & girlfriend (sorry that’s four, but they are all very important)

What is the craziest thing you have seen during a live dj set??
Um… I’m usually concentrating on the crowd’s general reaction and my set to be noticing crazy things. Recently I have been noticing more Sander Van Doorn branded clothes and merchandise at the front of the crowd. That is crazy for me… good crazy though!

[IMG]http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1...

Do you have a favourite dj or someone that inspires you, if so who??
Yes, but I’m sure most people will have heard this answer before, I am a massive fan of Jeff Mills. Apart from that all the artists that have released records on my label, Doorn Records, have really inspired me. John O’Callaghan, Wardt, Sied van Riel and Marcus Schossow are four DJ’s that make great music!

OK, so what inspires you to make music?? Also What and where do you see yourself in ten years time??
There isn’t anything specific that inspires me to make music, sometimes you just feel it and sometimes you get the equivalent top writers block. In ten years time I hope to be still doing this. My record label will be still going strong and I will be playing the best gig’s around the world! That’s the theory anyway!!

If you had to choose do you prefer djing or producing??
Producing, but only when I get it right. It can be very frustrating at times.

I can only imagine! So when you are not locked into your music what do you enjoy doing in your spare time??
I don’t have much spare time, any that I do have is spent with my family or my girlfriend just chilling out and catching up!

Do you have a most memorable moment as a dj??
Probably the third ever gig I played to 10,000 people. Can’t beat that for a heart stopping moment. I really enjoyed it but just that first few minutes when you have stepped up to the decks.

I bet that was amazing!! OK, three things you are good at and three things you are not so good at??
Three things I’m good at: djing, producing and sleeping!
Three things I’m bad at: cooking, cleaning and my accounts!

When you were a youngster was it your dream job to become a musician, if not what did you most want to become as your childhood dream job??
I wanted to do all the things that a little boy wants to be when he grows up, fighter pilot, fire fighter etc but I knew it was something to do with music I wanted to do by the time I was a teenager.

[IMG]http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1...

Don't forget you can catch Sander van Doorn at Godskitchen on Friday 22nd August alongside Sean Tyas. For full details and tickets head to www.godskitchen.com
