**** THE SCOTSMAN301 Tage her

Bursting with enthusiasm and tight, driving rhythm, this young Scots band has been polishing its performance over the past few years, taking its Scots/Irish amalgam of contemporary roots music round the folk club and festival circuit. Guitar, bouzouki, cittern, flute, fiddle and heartbeat-steady bodhran provide deft instrumental textures and two sets of dance tunes. Mainly up-tempo, the pace relaxes in Burns' 'Lea Rig', and swings along with delicious harmony in McKenna's own tune to the evergreen 'Jolly Beggar'.

RECORDING & CELTIC CONNECTIONS425 Tage her

We recently played at the Edinburgh folk club. Paul and myself have played there before but this was the first time the full band had been. It was a really enjoyable gig and you can read feedback on footstompin.com.

The next night we went to the Acoustic Music Club in Kirkcaldy, minus Seán unfortunately although it meant more sandwiches and drink for us!

The next day we headed to Knockengoroch Hairth Festival. We played in the sheilding tent on Fri and the main stage on Saturday. It was the muddiest festival i've ever been to but it didn't stop us enjoying ourselves The garden sessions were hosting the sessions in the long house and they invited us to play on Fri night by the fire. Also playing were the Banana Sessions who we really enjoyed - www.thebananasessions.co.uk.

We'll be playing at Celtic Connections 2009 in Glasgow. The date hasn't been confirmed yet but we will have some copies of our debut album with us ahead of the release date.

Finally, we are going into the studio with Dick Gaughan in a few weeks to record the album. We'll be at Stirling Folk Club on the 20th Ocotber and Inverness with the Sharon Shannon band on the 7th and 8th November.

GIGS, REVIEWS & SUNBATHING439 Tage her

We have been very busy with gigs the last few months. In August we had our first trip to Spain to play at the Festival Internacional de la Sierra. Although we only played one night they gave us accomodation for five nights so we had plenty of time to spend at the pool.
Also there from Scotland were Seylan Baxter, Cheyenne Brown and Ruaridh Pringle and we all played on stage together on our last night. We will be going back to the festival next year before going to Germany for the first time. More dates in Germany are to be confirmed so keep checking our tour dates.

Cambridge Folk Festival were kind enough to send the band tickets for the weekend. Although we didn't get to play we had a great time meeting up with old friends and making new ones. Jeana Leslie & Siobhan Miller launched their album at the festival and were great craic. While down there we met up with Fatea Magazine who have gave our EP a great review. They'll also feature a track on their next cover CD. Click here to read the review.

In August we returned to The Wee Folk Club for a fringe concert. We all just managed to squeeze in to the corner to play to a full house. Frank Burkitt from the Garden Sessions was there and recorded some of the show. You can hear the Loch Tay Boat Song and an interview with Paul by clicking here.

The Garden Sessions also did a special on Brian McNeill's song The Yew Tree which featured a recording of the song Paul and myself recorded. Listen by clicking here.

The Living Tradition printed an article on the Moniaive Folk Festival in which they kindly referred to us as "young band to look out for". Last week we were interviewed by the magazine and that article should be published in the next edition.

This week we're off to play the Edinburgh Folk Club, the Acoustic Music Club in Kirkcaldy and then Knockengorroch Hairth Festival. Hope to see you at a gig soon!

GIRVAN FOLK FESTIVAL REVIEW549 Tage her

From Carrick Gazette

If the concert at the Catholic Hall was anything to judge by, this year's festival has been truly inspiring.

Girvan regular Sean Donnelly and newcomers The Paul McKenna Band were among the line up of immensely gifted singer songwriters on stage Saturday night.

Sean's velvety voice and gentle guitar accompaniment, interspersed with stories and humour, kept the audience riveted.

As for the Paul McKenna Band, lead singer Pauls vocals were as mesmerising as his name suggests.

His lush vibrato conveys a depth of emotion reminiscent of American artist Tracy Chapman.

Instrumentally, the group consists of Paul on guitar, with flute, fiddle, bouzouki and bodhran.

Fiddler Ruairidh's relaxed style made his virtuoso playing look easy, red tassel swinging from the neck of his violin to indicate that he'd studied with the master fiddler Aonghas Grant from Lochaber.

This is a young group, all in their early twenties, but they play with maturity, passion and their own blend of folk and contemporary, as well as technical ability.

Hugh Taylor, who runs the Moniaive Folk festival, is a big fan of the up and coming band, and told the Gazette that they have just been signed to Greentrax, the UK's premier folk and celtic label.

MONIAIVE FOLK FESTIVAL549 Tage her

We just returned from the 7th Moniaive Folk Festival. It was our third visit to the town and as expected we had a great time. The festival was the busiest yet and there were 72 entrants for the piping competition alone. Festival organiser Hugh Taylor did an excellent job this year and his support of the band is much appreciated.

There was a great mix of people this year and both concerts were packed out. Ian Morrison joined us on stage on Saturday night for a set of reels and Pretty Peg. Ewan had an offer from a girl to be a nude dancer for the band which thankfully, he declined.

MULLIGANS BAR, AMSTERDAM549 Tage her

Last week the Paul Mckenna Band (minus Ruairidh unfortunately) were playing in Mulligans Irish bar in Amsterdam. This was a second trip for Ewan, Paul and David, but a first for myself. Old and new friends were met and we also came across some great musicians including an outstanding guitar player called Dominic Crosbie.

Of course we couldn't keep ourselves to Mulligans alone and so also took in some of Amsterdams nightlife. Newcastle man Phil Rook, who now lives in Amsterdam, took us out every night without fail to some good pubs and clubs. During this time the rest of the guys were amazed at my dancing skills, especialy my robot! Phil is hopefully coming over to Scotland for the Moniaive folk festival next week.

At the gig on Friday night Ewan's sister Mhairi joined us for a few sets of tunes and we all just managed to fit on the stage.

The trip wouldn't have been complete without the help of our good friend Mark MacInaw. He proved to be our tour guide, comedian and even played a few songs on the Saturday night.

Everyone had a great trip and we would be very happy to go back any time.
