"Fighting Animal Abuse Across Ireland"

Top Irish Model to Pose Nude for ARAN & PETA!‏137 Tage her

Top model Suzanne McCabe is set to strip for PETA's first-ever Irish 'I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur' campaign.
Following in the footsteps of Pamela Anderson, Christy Turlington and Sophie Ellis Bextor, the gorgeous Dubliner joins a long list of beauties who have bared all for a good cause.
And the recently turned vegetarian, who hit the headlines earlier this summer after twice suffering from a collapsed lung, said she wasn't in the least bit shy about baring all for a good cause.
The self-confessed animal lover (27) was approached to star in the world-famous ads by the charity as it was well aware of her long-time dedication to ensuring the protection of animals.
"It's not tacky at all; it's very tastefully done. You can't really see anything, but it still gets the message across, which is the most important thing.
"My parents weren't overly delighted when they heard about the nudity, but they know how important the cause is to me and I know once they see the pictures they will be happy."
Speaking to the Herald, the Killiney native said: "I'm thrilled to be joining the incredible group of women who have done this in the past.
"The head of PETA Ireland, John Carmody, is also the head of animal right's group ARAN, with whom I've done loads of work in the past, so he approached me because he thought I'd be perfect for the job," Suzanne explained.
"I approached ARAN first a long time ago about campaigning against a field hunt in Canada, and from there I sort of became their celebrity spokesperson.
"It's incredibly exciting because this is the first time this PETA campaign has ever been done here," she said.
"We shot the campaign about two months ago, so hopefully it will be on billboards, newspapers and magazines nationwide by the end of the summer.
"I'm delighted with the picture selected and I got to hand pick the photographer, so I chose a close friend who I knew I'd be really comfortable with," Suzanne continued.
"PETA's response to the picture has been fantastic; they thought it was stunning."
Describing the campaign, Suzanne said: "There is a lot of nakedness, but with well-placed arms and legs. It's very glamorous, very sexy and very natural."

ARAN Members Show That Actions Speak Louder Than Words for Animals in Circuses‏137 Tage her

As animal act circuses roll out across the country, so is ARAN’s latest campaign to rollback the curtain on animal suffering in Irish circuses and reach out to potential circuses goers to show them the real side to animal suffering.
Animal Rights Action Network members and supporters gathered in Dublin city centre to bring attention to animal suffering inside Irish animal act circuses. With banners reading ‘The Slave Trade is Alive and Kicking, Stop Cruelty to Animals in the Circus’ and ‘Stop Circus Suffering’, our dedicated supporters took time out of their Sunday afternoon to spend time speaking out for animals in need. They once again responded to our appeal and call for help. Throughout the event hundreds of leaflets were distributed including DVD’s from the Animal Defenders International investigation into Irish circuses during 2003-2005 which revealed poor conditions in which the animals were living in, including animals been hit behind the scenes and much more. The peaceful and lively protest also reached hundreds of passing cars, buses, vans and trucks all crammed with people wanting to know what was going on – with a megaphone members chanted ‘There’s No Excuse for Animal Abuse, Stop Circus Suffering’, information about animal suffering in the circus was also available. Over the coming weeks, Animal Rights Action Network are organizing events in various cities across Ireland, so if you would like to do more then please get involved.
For most people who get involved,, they are very much against cruelty to animals and hate much of what is happening to animals, at Animal Rights Action Network we believe that words are just not enough and that doing ‘something’, anything, to help animals is a must because the cruelty will never end if we don’t push the boat out and give at least one or two hours a month to attend peaceful protests by ARAN or even responding to emails calling for your help. Although most people are busy, we very much welcome everyone’s support – but is giving at least one or two hours a month out of your time much to ask or even responding to an email even if you can’t help when animals are suffering and dieing in the worse circumstances known?
Please if you are against animal abuse and want to see it end, words are just not good enough – please, do something, get involved with ARAN today and start attending our events and helping to raise awareness, the animals need all the help and support they can get and using your voice to help them will bring us closer to the day when animals are no longer exploited for human use.
Thank you to everyone who turned up on the day and of course the many people who could not attend for one reason or another, at ARAN we value your ongoing support and activism.

Update: ARAN Pig Cruelty Investigation in Ireland176 Tage her

Dear ARAN Members & Supporters,

I am writing to bring you up to date with our recent expose of cruelty to pigs at an Irish pig breeding facility based in Co, Cavan. The investigation came about when an employee at the facility contacted ARAN to report pigs been violently killed with sledgehammers and that other adult pigs where found dying—often for two days in a row, on top of other baby piglets that were discarded in the back of trucks at the facility. Footage inside the facility also documented pigs eating other dead pigs and many grown adult pigs confined to what are currently legal farrowing crates, these are basically cages so small that the adult pig can barely even move whilst she nurses her newly born piglets. All of the pigs that were violently killed were considered ‘useless’ to slaughterhouses.

Right now, Animal Rights Action Network is happy to confirm that the facility in which we exposed is now under supervision and surveillance and that the Gardai are preparing a file for the Department of Public Prosecutions. Animal Rights Action Network is working on ensuring that this story and the pigs plight gets as much press attention as is possible, we need to shine light on the killing of animals for their flesh and the cruelty and violence that’s associated with killing animals.

ARAN is working hard to ensure that those responsible for killing these animals are fined and jailed. We do genuinely believe that our work has at least highlighted the plight of animals killed for the slaughterhouse and highlighted the need for people to go vegetarian and vegan. Of course it now also makes others in the killing industry think twice about killing animals in such a viscous and cruel manner. We also believe that thanks to the huge press attention we generated for this situation that many more people out there will choose to go vegetarian—we will never know how many hearts and minds we’ve touched.

Breaking News: ARAN Gets Irish Pig Cruelty Front Page Headlines, Today!‏184 Tage her

Dear ARAN Members,

Animal Rights Action Network has just released heartbreaking undercover footage obtained directly inside an Irish pig breeding facility in Ireland. The footage is today front page headlines in The Irish Sun.

The horrific footage shows cruelty to pigs, including a grown adult pig, which, in the video appears to be prolapsing, (her insides hanging out from her anus). The pig is repeatedly hit forcefully over the head, crushing her skull as she screams in pain, whilst continuing to be violently hit with a sledgehammer by the employees at the facility. One employee that works there, claims this way of killing the animals is an every day occurrence and is the normal way to do so at the facility—although not legal by any standards—this way of killing the animals helps to save costs without calling for a vet to ‘humanely’ kill the pigs that the facility feels they cannot sell onto slaughterhouses in Ireland and abroad. During the investigation many baby piglets have been found dead with their skulls all bashed in, ironically killed in the very same way. This way of killing pigs that are unwanted violates Irish animal welfare laws. ARAN has furnished the Department of Agriculture in Dublin with the findings of the investigation, after a lengthy meeting with department officials nothing yet has came about. The Gardai are now investigating the matter further. Irish media outlets have also came out supporting our finding’s.

Some other footage obtained inside the facility include:-

* Workers were seeing smashing the head of a live grown adult pig whom appears to be pro-lapsing with a sledgehammer, the animal continues to take the blows of the hammer whilst screaming in pain, before she eventually drops to the ground and convulses, all this been watched by employees of the facility.
* A Truck full of dead baby piglets whilst another grown pig lies dead for up to two days as stated by the investigating employee.
* Dead piglets lie among live piglets.
* Grown adult pigs confined to tiny farrowing crates, the pigs cannot move whilst their piglets gather around.

"Every time we pull back the curtain on slaughterhouses or their animal factories, we reveal atrocities that would make most people lose their lunch," says Stephan Wymore for ARAN. "The horrendous abuse documented at this facility clearly violates Irish animal welfare law, and we’re asking that these people and this company be held accountable."

If you thought animal suffering did not exist in Irish laboratories and university hospitals think again!

Bringing to light the increasing abuse of animals in Irish laboratories, Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN)—Ireland’s national organization dedicated to furthering the rights of animals—has compiled a list of the five worst offenders. Experiments were chosen based on the extent of pain and suffering experienced by animals and the irrelevance of the experiments to human health.

Experimenters at Queens University in Belfast deliberately blinded newborn kittens by placing the animals in a chamber containing three times more oxygen than normal air. After 32 days, the kittens were killed and damage to the animals’ eyes was observed. Expert critics point out that due to significant differences in the anatomic and functional organization of the visual system of cats and humans, these experiments have no relevance to people.
Researchers at University College Dublin caused deliberate brain damage in rats by cutting open the animals’ skulls and delivering a blow to the exposed brain. The purpose of this invasive and deadly experiment? To see how brain trauma affects the intestine.
Using 18-month-old Labrador dogs, experimenters at Cork University Hospital and University College Cork injected a toxic chemical into the animals, in order to cause deliberate kidney failure. The dogs were killed at the end of the experiment.
Researchers at University College Cork cut long incisions into the abdomens of pigs and tied several exposed arteries. After using a shunt to connect an artery and a vein, the experimenters measured the impact of their manipulations on blood flow.
Experimenters at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin tied heavy rubber bands to the hind legs of rats to obstruct the flow of blood. Some rats had been given the chemical glutamine prior to the procedure but all of the rats were killed at the end of the experiment and their organs were examined. The experimenters concluded that glutamine has protective properties, but this “result” had already been determined in humans.

The experiments identified in ARAN’s list underscore the fact that laws governing animal experimentation fail to provide meaningful protection for animals – nothing is prohibited no matter how pointless, redundant or cruel.

TIME FOR ACTION568 Tage her

If you believe abusing animals is unacceptable, the time is now to act. The very first thing we can do to promote animal liberation is to look within ourselves and try to lead more cruelty-free lives by refusing to support animal exploitative industries, such as those producing meat, eggs, and dairy. The violence we inflict on animals must first stop with us before we can effectively encourages others to follow our example.

With so many willing to exploit animals and support their abuse, animals have few friends. We are their only advocates. It’s up to each one of us to provide a voice for the voiceless and demand their freedom just as vigorously as they would could they themselves speak. While the movement is still young and has a long way to go, the number of people who have already made changes in their lives out of respect for animals is truly inspiring. There’s no reason to wait another day before expanding our circle of moral concern further than just our own species or the dogs and cats we cherish. All we’ve got to lose is our position as oppressors—a status we should be eager to get rid of.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE568 Tage her

As we learn about the ways animals are exploited for food, it’s all-too-common to feel so passionately about ending animal suffering that we let that fervor override effective communication with those who aren’t yet vegetarian. Anger and frustration may be understandable, but we need to take care not to let them overwhelm us, overshadow all of the positive steps we can take towards making a difference for animals, and, most importantly, prevent us from being teachers, rather than fighters.

The vast majority of us weren’t raised as vegetarians. While we learn more about animal exploitation and move further along the path to cruelty-free living, it’s often difficult to remember that—just like our family members, friends, colleagues, and co-workers who aren’t yet vegetarian—we, too, once contributed to animal suffering.

Because of this, it’s often helpful to ask ourselves, “Why did I become vegetarian?” Chances are, we didn’t choose cruelty-free living because someone called us murderers or condemned our food choices. Likely, we adopted vegetarianism because someone helped us see that choosing compassion over killing was a simple way to end suffering, while improving our health and the environment.

We’re in a great position to affect positive change for animals by being their most effective ambassadors. Lead by example and teach others with patience. The animals would thank you if they could
