Last night I saw the award-winning ‘Hamell on Trial’ in the Bog Lane. Ed Hamell is a one-man-show; singer, songwriter, comedian, raconteur, social commentator, entertainer - Think Bill Hicks with a guitar or a very funny Billy Bragg! Ed Hamell’s humour is definitely not for kids, either in content, or in language, but hey, there were no kids in the audience, so that was not a problem!

The support band on the night were ‘The Spuds’, a three-piece from Athlone, and they were superb. They look like your worst nightmare, but they are actually lovely lads. Their set was hilarious, and included them handing out free cans of beer to the entire audience. Again, they are so ‘not-for-kids’, but they had me in stitches, and I can’t wait to see them again. A trip to Athlone may be in order, to see them and ‘Pariah’! Or maybe some promoter could get them both over here for a gig? Just a thought!

Seriously. The album is barely out and we get sent the following review that was so offensive (and fucking hilarious) we couldn't stick it up on bebo. So here it is:

Da good folks at Shite n Onions published a review of our EP. God bless their little hearts n arses. Here's an excerpt:

"As a sub-genre, ‘Celtic Folk Punk’ tends to be a hybrid; a combination of traditional and punk styles. Nevertheless, almost as if this seemingly instinctive concept wasn’t properly explained, along comes ‘Spud Nigger,’ a band that is Celtic, (being from the very middle of the Emerald Isle,) Folk, (well, acoustic anyways,) and Punk, (in almost every other interpretation of the definition.)

More specifically, ‘Spud Nigger’ is an acoustic punk trio out of County Westmeath, in the center of Ireland. Made up of acoustic guitar, bass, drums and vocals, the three-piece outfit plays fast-moving, upbeat punk in a stripped-down, minimalist style entirely like itself and no one else." "

Ah right. We didn't think it needed an explanation, but loads a folks have been asking, so here's what we dug up (hee hee):

Spud Nigger (spʌd nIg ər)

1. An extremely disparaging and offensive term for a person of Irish origin. This phrase recalls that the Irish have been victims of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks in the USA, being economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised and regarded as contemptible, inferior and/or ignorant.

2. A reference to Irish potato farmers during the height of the Irish potato famine. Potatoes turned black in the ground due to blight, a phenomenon which also led to the phrase, "Black 47," referring simultaneously to the blight and the year at which the Irish famine reached its zenith.

3. From the Irish, práta dubh (prah-thə dʌv) Literally, "black potato."

We came across the phrase when this one (non-Irish) fella used it to try an offend a friend of ours (an Irish fella). Unfortunately, our friend (and us beside him) fell about laughing, we thought it was the funniest thing we ever heard.

And now we have the best band name ever.

Cheers to everyone who came out ta Bar Metro last Saturday - class first gig!

2nd gig is July 11 n da Palace at 11pm (oh, the irony).

Pretty much all da free EPs are gone and the cases of hearing loss and musically-induced brain damage in the town have risen accordingly. There are a few EPs left up in da tattoo place, so check it out if ya want one.

Rumours that our full 13 track album is available for a fiver at our shows have yet to be substantiated. A FIVER?? DATS FUCK ALL!! sez you.

We're shooting a music video. Anyone know where ta get saliva screens for a video lens?

We're editing footage from our first show and will post a video of us playin or of the tool ordering take away after the show . . . somethin . . . soon.
