Share your memories.....don't let cancer have the last word!64 Tage her

“I once asked Ian Dury if he thought he had missed anything in life as a result of his disability. He paused for a moment, looked up at me and said, ‘I’ve missed a few buses.’" Phill Jupitus’ story about his famous friend is just one of a number of funny recollections which form part of an internet video archive launched to celebrate the lives of people who have died of cancer. We are keen to get as many people as possible to contribute to the campaign. Jack Cumming, AICR's e-Commerce Manager, said: “Often, when people die, what keeps them very much alive in our minds are the funny sayings or stories that they told or that we tell about them. Recounting these is a great way of treasuring loved ones and we want people to share those happy memories and, as the title says, help us make sure cancer doesn’t have the last word.”

David Tennant, one of AICR’s ambassadors, has recorded a brief film (see below in our video box) explaining how people can go about sending in their videos. David said: “I really like the idea behind this and I think AICR does fantastic work funding vital cancer research projects right across the world. I’d urge people to send in their own films and, if they are able, to donate too. I think AICR’s aim of saving lives by improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer is something we should all support.” Mobile phones, webcams and camcorders can all be used to send in videos to the archive, which is on the AICR website: www.aicr.org.uk

"Hot baths, long walks and chamomile tea" - Inspiring stories of life, death and coping with cancer123 Tage her

Be inspired by heartbreaking stories, funny stories, hopeful stories – amazing stories.

A little while ago, I started to ask supporters to share their personal cancer stories with me.

I could never have known what would happen next.

Stories started to pour through my office door. Each day another mail sack, each story a tale of how cancer has affected people's lives, their loved ones and generation after generation. 'My story is like many others - very sad’ one lady writes. 'I look at my Grandchildren and wonder what is in store for them’, writes another. I received over 400 in total and I don't mind telling you that I cried many tears over them.

Together, they are a powerful documentation about cancer in our time and the need to free the world of this devastating disease as soon as possible. The stories were so powerful that I thought they should go in a book for everyone to read, 'Hot baths, long walks and chamomile tea.' My hope is that somebody will read it in years to come and say 'I can’t imagine what it was Iike before there was a cure for cancer.'

As an AICR supporter, I know you may be interested to read this book, so I'd like to offer you the chance to download it here. (http://www.aicr.org.uk/Docs/Inspirin... When you read them you'll see why each has been chosen to inspire people to support research into cancer.

Breaking News - New way to kill cancer130 Tage her

A new way of making cancer cells die has been discovered by scientists, a breakthrough that could eventually lead to new treatments for a range of different cancers. AICR partly funded the study, carried out by a collaborative research team working between the universities of Manchester and Southampton. They investigated how antibody treatments make cancer cells kill themselves and found a previously undiscovered mechanism that could, in future, be even more effective in causing their death. It is well known that when antibodies bind to cells, including cancer cells, they can ‘flag’ those targets for destruction by the body’s immune system. By contrast, the research shows that antibodies can kill cancer cells directly. When the antibody binds, it causes lysosomes (small acid containing sacs) inside the cell to swell and burst, rapidly releasing their toxic contents with fatal results for the cancer cell.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, offers hope of more alternative approaches to killing cancer cells that may have become resistant to the traditional chemotherapy treatments.

A number of antibody treatments for cancer have been developed over the last decade and some of them are a huge step forward in treatment. The current research identifies how some of these kill cancer cells and provides exciting insights into how other antibodies that use this mechanism might be developed.

Dr Mark Cragg, from the University of Southampton, who together with Prof. Tim Illidge, from the University of Manchester, led the research said: “Our findings are significant and open up the possibility of applying the knowledge of how antibodies can be developed to trigger cell death and may enable us to design treatments for other cancers.”

The large study was funded by AICR, Leukaemia Research, Cancer Research UK and Tenovus. AICR's Dr Mark Matfield said: “The discovery of a new mechanism by which cancer cells kill themselves is an important step forward in cancer research. Killing the cancer cells is the basis of all successful cancer treatments.”

Titan Abseil140 Tage her

Do you have nerves of steel?

If so, how would you like to free-fall abseil from Clydebank’s Titan Crane on 5th September 2009?

At 150ft tall it has stood on the banks of the River Clyde for over 100 years, a symbol of the industrial age. The Titan Crane (http://titanabseil.org.uk/) is a true Scottish landmark. You have a once in a lifetime chance to free-fall abseil this monster structure and raise money for charity at the same time. AICR has 10 places available and all we ask is that you raise a minimum of £200 sponsorship.

No previous experience is necessary, a dedicated team of expert instructors will be there to talk you through the basics of abseiling, including how to control the speed of your descent. You will be provided with all the abseil equipment, all you need to bring on the day is comfortable clothing, sensible footwear and perhaps a few friends and family to cheer you on! There is no maximum age limit for the Titan Abseil. If you are under 18 we require the consent of your parent or guardian before you can abseil. There are no weight restrictions.

If you are up for the challenge or would like some more information then contact Suzanne Shaw on 01334 477910 or email events@aicr.org.uk
