Tony Mowbray - I Feel Honoured To Manage This Great Club176 dagen geleden

i feel honoured to manage this great club

David Friel
TONY MOWBRAY was paraded as the new Celtic manager on Wednesday morning and told the club’s supporters he feels immensely honoured to be taking up the position.

The former Celtic player was officially unveiled to a packed press conference at Celtic Park and talked at length about his hopes for the future. He then met hundreds of fans who had braved the rain to greet him at the stadium entrance.

A popular figure among the Celtic faithful, he spoke with sincerity as he outlined his vision. His main priority will be to bring the SPL title back to Paradise, but he pledged to entertain at the same time.

“First and foremost, I want to say that I’m delighted, elated and hugely honoured to be sitting here today,” the new Celtic boss said. “I can’t wait to get started.

“I played here for four years in the 1990s when the club wasn’t at its real heights. When I left, I was overwhelmed by the support the Celtic family gave me. I was engulfed by thousands of goodwill messages and it left me with a feeling of warmth.

“When this opportunity arose, I felt drawn towards it really. The more I explored it, the more it felt right. There’s an emotional and professional pull. It’s an honour to be the Celtic manager.

“The support, the history and the tradition of Celtic - that’s what I hold close to me as football values. I fell in love with football at a young age and now I’m at a club that has always tried to give supporters entertainment – score goals, win trophies and play with panache.

“It just felt right for me and for the last while Celtic have been speaking to West Brom. That’s culminated with my appointment and I’m looking forward to putting my stamp and philosophy on this team.

“I will try to give the supporters, who show huge commitment, something back. Hopefully, they can enjoy watching their team have success.

“I understand the demands of winning at Celtic. I want to bring silverware and carry on the tradition of success. I look forward to the challenge of European football as well.

“That’s a new challenge for me, but working in the Premiership taught me a lot about the finer detail of competing at the highest level. That was a big learning curve and hopefully that will help Celtic in the SPL and Europe.” ( taken from www.celticfc.net )

A truly nostalgic squad of Celtic legends have been lined up to join the Tommy Burns Select and pay tribute to their former team-mate, manager, mentor and friend.

Tommy sadly died on May 15, 2008 after a long and courageous battle against cancer and his passing was felt across the whole of Scottish football.

He served Celtic with distinction over many years as player, manager, Head of Youth and first-team coach, but always considered himself just to be a supporter who got lucky.

The Tribute Match will benefit the Burns family with donations also being made by the family to Celtic Charity Fund and the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust, which has been established by Tommy’s daughters.

And on the day of the match, Rosemary Burns will also unveil a bronze sculpture of Tommy at the entrance to Celtic Park.

The sculpture, depicting Tommy’s life in football will be mounted on the wall of the stadium as Tommy becomes the inaugural inductee into an elite group of true Celtic Legends.

And, in a generous gesture, TicketMaster will return 60% of their normal fees back to the club as a donation to the charity

A decade of dominance:
CELTIC have officially been declared as the most successful club in the 10-year history of the SPL.

Since the inception of the new league set-up in season 1998/99, Celtic have lifted the SPL title on no fewer than six occasions, with Martin O'Neill and Gordon Strachan guiding the Hoops to three championships each.

In addition, Celtic have twice lost out on the title on the final day of the league season, in 2002/03 and 2004/05, by the narrowest of margins.

Official statistics released by the league show that Celtic have played 376 games in the SPL, winning 280 of those fixtures and amassing a total of 891 points.

Rangers trail in second place, with 256 wins from 376 games. Hearts are third on the all-time list with 156 wins from 376 games.

Celtic are also the highest-scoring team in the history of the SPL. The Hoops have found the net an impressive 888 times in 10 years. Rangers have scored 799 goals.

The Hoops have also conceded the least amount of goals, 303, in the last 10 years. Rangers have let in 305 goals. Hearts have conceded 450 times.

Former Celtic striker Henrik Larsson is the top scorer in the history of the SPL with 158 goals. John Hartson bagged a total of 88 SPL goals, Scott McDonald has 67 strikes to his name, while Chris Sutton (63), Derek Riordan (59) and Stilian Petrov (55) also feature in the top 10 list of scorers.

Larsson scored a staggering 12 SPL hat-tricks for Celtic and topped the scoring charts in five of the last 10 seasons. Mark Viduka, Hartson and McDonald have also finished as the top scorer in the SPL over the last decade.

In terms of individual honours, Celtic stars, past and present, dominate the Player of the Year awards over the last 10 years.

Larsson (twice), Viduka, Sutton, Hartson, Shaun Maloney, Shunsuke Nakamura and Aiden McGeady have all been named as the SPFA Player of the Year, while Larsson (twice), Paul Lambert, Jackie McNamara, Hartson and Nakamura were named as Player of the Year by the Scottish Football Writers.

Celtic also hold the records for most points won in a season – 103 in 2001/02 – and most goals scored in a season – 105 in 2003/04. Overall, it has been a decade of dominance.(from www.celticfc.net )

robson strike seals derby thriller592 dagen geleden

CELTIC served up a classic in the final derby match of the season, with Barry Robson’s second-half penalty sealing a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over their old rivals.

Gordon Strachan’s men came from behind to level in this hard-fought encounter, with Scott McDonald scoring one of the goals of the season to equalise just minutes before half-time.

The result opens up a five-point gap at the top of the league table, though Rangers still have three games in hand.

The very first minute opened with a chance for Rangers, with the visitors serving up a warning of what was to come, when Steven Davis swung in a corner that Daniel Cousins headed toward the bottom corner.

Artur Boruc saved and Andreas Hinkel cleared away the rebound, but as later events were to illustrate, this early warning went unheeded by the defending champions.

This was perhaps because just three minutes later Celtic took the lead in a perfect counter-attack, with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink heading a ball into the path of Scott McDonald and the little Australian rifling home.

But after this early opener Celtic failed to get a grip of the game, while Rangers looked dangerous on the counter and from set pieces.

Then, in the 17th minute Davis swung in another corner and this time it was David Weir who rose above a pack of three Celtic players to head home the leveller.

In the wake of this goal both sides enjoyed chances, with Neil Alexander making a good save to deny Shunsuke Nakamura, whose free-kick looked bound for the top corner and Nacho Novo nipping in as Lee Naylor waited for the ball to drop, robbing the full back of possession and delivering a ball across goal that Stephen McManus hacked away.

Then, in the 29th minute Davis delivered another corner kick, again from in front of the Celtic main stand and Cousin rose above his man at the near post to head the ball into the far corner.

The pendulum had again swung in Rangers favour, but there was still a twist remaining in this dramatic first half and with two minutes remaining, McGeady took possession on the left and fed McDonald just inside the the penalty box.

Turning, the little Australian then looked up and delivered an exquisite chip that sailed over the head of Alexander and into the net. It was a sudden and completely unexpected turn and one which gave Celtic added impetus after the restart.

With play raging on furiously, Nacho Novo missed an excellent chance, driving the ball wide of Boruc’s far post, but both teams were dealt serious blows, with both Weir and Stephen McManus going off injured.

Minutes later Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink picked up a booking for a foul on substitute Amdy Faye and was replaced by Georgios Samaras, and the big striker was still making his way forward when the ball was played to McDonald on the edge of the box.

Trying to control the ball, the Celtic striker was clumsily barged by Kirk Broadfoot, going down under the weight of the challenge for a clear penalty.

Having missed one in the last derby match, McDonald passed up on the chance to complete his hat-trick, with Barry Robson stepping up to the plate.

With the hopes and dreams of the Celtic supporters bearing down on him, the midfielder’s composure was perfect and his finish emphatic, driven low and hard into the net.

In the wake of this strike Rangers struggled to get back into the match and looked deflated and frustrated in the closing minutes and were sucked into giving away a series of needless fouls – the last of which saw Whittaker rightly given a second yellow card and his marching orders for a rash challenge on Nakamura.

The final whistle was met by jubilant scenes in the stands, with the Celtic supporters recognising the importance of this victory

Celtic a priceless 2-1 603 dagen geleden

JAN VENNEGOOR OF HESSELINK scored one of the most important goals of his career to give Celtic a priceless 2-1 win over Rangers in an incredible Glasgow derby.

The Dutch striker crashed home a header in 93 minutes to move Celtic to within one point of the Ibrox side at the top of the SPL. The Hoops can now go back to the top of the table if they beat Aberdeen on at Celtic Park on Saturday.

In a dramatic match, Rangers were reduced to 10 men at 1-1 when Carlos Cuellar handled Shunsuke Nakamura’s goal-bound shot and was given a straight red. However, Scott McDonald missed the resultant penalty.

Shunsuke Nakamura had earlier produced a spectacular opener for Celtic in the first half, but Nacho Novo climbed off the bench to equalise for Rangers. However, it counted for nothing as Celtic showed immense character to grab the late winner.

Hoops manager Gordon Strachan opted to field the same side that beat Motherwell 4-1 on Sunday, with Barry Robson and Paul Hartley continuing in central midfield. Scott Brown was serving the second game of a three-match suspension.

Celtic Park was shaking to its foundations pre-match as a capacity crowd turned up for the first derby at Paradise in over a year. With so much at stake, there was an overwhelming sense of anticipation as the two sides emerged from the tunnel to a deafening noise.

Tackles were flying in from all angles as the game started in explosive fashion. Only 20 seconds had elapsed when Robson was penalised for a challenge on Christian Dailly and the pace hardly died from then on in.

As expected, Celtic had the bulk of possession from the outset, with Rangers looking to hit on the break – using Jean-Claude Darcheville as a loan striker.

In 10 minutes, Celtic carved out the first chance. Nakamura cut infield and picked out Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who had escaped the Rangers defence. The Dutchman was racing clear but Allan McGregor was quick off his line and the chance was lost.

With Rangers sitting deep, Celtic had constant possession and the visitors were retreating further and further. Aiden McGeady was always looking to create as Celtic upped the tempo.

The Hoops were winning corner after corner and Robson and Nakamura were taking turns to swing vicious crosses into the box. From one of Robson’s curlers, Gary Caldwell sent a header towards the net but Rangers scrambled clear.

It seemed that a goal was coming and Nakamura duly delivered with a strike right out of the top drawer in 20 minutes.

Picking up possession on the run, the Japanese genius took one touch and crashed a swerving, dipping 35-yard half-volley beyond McGregor and into the top corner.

Goal of the season? Undoubtedly. You will struggle to see a better goal scored in any season and as Paradise erupted, Nakamura was mobbed by his team-mates.

The goal energised Celtic and they continued to press for more. The closest came when McDonald accepted a slack pass from Barry Ferguson and raced down the right wing.

With the tireless Robson and Vennegoor of Hesselink lurking in the box, the Aussie striker fired an attempted cross into the box, but the ball flew towards McGregor and the Rangers goalkeeper had to bat it to safety.

In terms of possession and pressure, Celtic were dominant in the first period. Darcheville was Rangers’ only real threat and his best chance – a low shot – was deflected wide by Stephen McManus as half-time arrived.

Mark Wilson came on for the injured Lee Naylor at the break, while Rangers replaced Kirk Broadfoot with Novo.

McDonald had the first opening of the second period. Nakamura, McGeady and Wilson all combined to find the Australian and he turned into space, before firing a shot over the bar.

Yet, Rangers would have the next chance in 55 minutes and they made the most of it. Steven Whittaker stabbed the ball forward on the right and Novo collected possession before rifling a shot into the corner.

It was a blow for Celtic and the Ibrox men visibly took a lift from the goal. However, the Hoops were handed a glorious chance to equalise in 70 minutes.

Nakamura gathered possession on the right and outfoxed the Rangers defence before firing a shot towards the top corner. It was a goal all the way, but Cuellar stuck out a hand and deflected the ball on to the bar.

Referee Kenny Clark immediately pointed to the spot and gave Cuellar a straight red card. It was now McDonald versus McGregor, but the Rangers goalkeeper flew to his left to save the Australian’s penalty.

Celtic introduced Georgios Samaras for Robson as they went for the winner, while Rangers were forced to replace the injured McGregor with Neil Alexander.

The Hoops laid siege to the Rangers goal and they got their reward deep into injury time. Caldwell picked out McDonald and he headed across goal, where Vennegoor of Hesselink found the net as Celtic Park went wild.
