EA has made "250 key improvements" to the 2009 version of FIFA, including improved responsiveness and a revamped collision system, reveals the first-look preview in the latest GamesMaster mag.

Among the improvements in the new FIFA, which is due out in Autumn, are "improved responsiveness that allows for quicker release of the ball, greater urgency in the off-the-ball running, a new jostle system that takes into account the strength of the players when going shoulder to shoulder and subtle animations that enable players to take first-time shots."

That's four out of the 250 then. Another of the 09 edition's biggest changes is a completely revamped collision system, which calculates speed, weight and power when the players collide, as each player will have their own individual strength and power stats.

This time around, the defender won't always win, and this could potentially change challenges completely.

Although GM notes the new system makes tumbles look far more realistic, it's not just a visual change. For example, if a tackle comes in and hits a player's standing leg there's a good chance he'll go down hard, taking him out of the game. But if the player is in mid-strike and gets clipped, he could lose his balance but continue running.

That's the current-gen version then. On the PS2 space, EA says it's focusing on tweaking rather than reinventing the game, although as with PS3 and 360 it's focused on making a more realistic collision system.

The Wii version meanwhile is set to feature multiple control methods, one said to play just like PES on Wii, another where passing is automatic and 'Footii' mode, an 8-aside, arcade-y Mii match.

EA Sports allowed the international assemblage of game journalists extensive hands-on time with the upcoming new version of FIFA 2009. Here's what we saw in this impressive demonstration:

Considerable gameplay improvements: Consistent with the company's improvements on its other football titles, FIFA 2009 exhibited some promising gameplay improvements. Most noticeable is the game's increased responsiveness. Passing, dribbling, and even the physical pushing and shoving that occurs in the game all occur at a much faster and more realistic pace than previous versions of FIFA. The game's graphics have traditionally been impressive, and the heightened realism around the animations has a huge positive impact on the overall quality of play. Here's an example: During sliding tackles, the ball-handler can adjust and prevent themselves from falling if their non weight-bearing leg is tackled. Another example is goalkeepers' ability to reach behind their bodies if they misjudge a shot on goal.

Customizable strategic depth: FIFA 2009 will allow players the ability to customize and create specific offensive and defensive play sets and strategies for different in-game scenarios by choosing between a variety of aggression levels and risk-taking.

Be A Pro: Players can create their own pro soccer player and attempt to become a legend by playing through a series of games staged over the course of 4 seasons.

In a riveting match between this reporter and a fairly experienced gaming writer from Poland, GamePro held fast to a 0-0 draw that held the game's Vancouver-based designers riveted. Based upon the raised eyebrows of my opponent, it was clear that Poland could not believe that this upstart American could hold his own on the pitch.

FIFA 09 will be the latest installment of Electronic Arts' series of football video games. Developed by EA Canada, it is published by Electronic Arts worldwide under the EA Sports label. It will be released late September on all popular gaming formats in Europe and Australasia, and in North America. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game feature an improved game engine with superior graphics and different commentators, and are dubbed "next-generation" by Electronic Arts. On all other platforms - including the PC - the game utilises an older engine. The Nintendo DS version features fewer teams, stadiums, game modes and kits due to the limitations of the machine's storage medium. Commentary comes from Sky Sports' Martin Tyler and Andy Gray on next generation consoles; however, ITV Sports' Clive Tyldesley partners Gray on current generation consoles.
