Fundraising gig for festival

Date: 18 September 2008
By Steven Flanagan

MONTROSE Town Hall is set to be jammed to the rafters in November when it hosts folk-punk rockers Neck in a special fundraising gig for next year's music festival.

Describing themselves as purveyors of psycho-ceilidh rock, Neck have been directly compared to the Pogues in their prime and have won rave reviews for their uplifting and rowdy shows over the last six years.

Their reputation has seen them play Glastonbury three times and they have gigged with some of the top names in music, including Hayseed Dixie, Shane MacGowan and The Popes, Stiff Little Fingers and The Undertones.

Neck will be supported at the event by one of the most popular acts from this year's Montrose Music Festival, Sons o' the Soil - an eight-piece acoustic celtic-rock group based in both Scotland and Ireland.

The gig will be held on November 22 and festival committee chair Lynda Paton said it offered an opportunity for locals to enjoy another top-quality gig in the town while contributing towards what promises to be an even bigger and better music festival next year.

She said: "Neck are such an exciting live act and we're delighted to have secured them to play at our special fundraiser in November.

"The Sons o' The Soil were so popular at this year's event too, but we know lots of people didn't get a chance to see them so we're delighted to welcome them back.

"It's set to be an incredibly enjoyable evening – a real hooley!

"This year's festival proved that Montrose is more the capable of hosting top-quality gigs and that's something we're going to continue and expand on.

"We're planning a few surprises for next year's event and this fundraiser gives the community a chance to contribute towards it at the same time as having a great night."

Last year's music festival was a resounding success and the event generated an estimated £500,000 for the local economy.

Tickets for the gig will go on sale later this month. For details, check the website at www.montrosemusicfestival.co.uk, phone 07925 136 548 or speak to any committee member.
