| Book of Dust gets underway soon? | 602 days ago | ||
| Philip Pullman is doing the rounds this week publicising his new book 'Once Upon A Time in the North' about the meeting of Lee Scorcesby and Iorek Byrnison. In an interview with Publisher's Weekly (the entire interview can be found here: http://www.publishersweekly.com/arti... ) he discussed about returning to our favourite character Lyra once again, with the long awaited 'Book of Dust'. Pullman talked of when he would begin to write the novel: "The Book of Dust has had numerous hold-ups, principally because of the other things people keep asking me to do that prevent me from being single-minded about it...When I’ve finished the story I’m writing for the comic, I’ll say no to everything else. I wonder how many times I’ve said that now...." For those who don't know what this book contains, Pullman himself fills you in: "It’s another novel. It’s set rather later, after Lyra’s Oxford, when Lyra is a bit older. There’s a little hint about what Lyra is doing later on. I wanted to bring Lyra in tangentially at the end...I’ve got my hands full with Lyra for the next two or three years." We still hope this involves meeting Will once again... please? | |||

| A Big If | 617 days ago | ||
| The finer business details on making 'The Subtle Knife' are alot more complicated than first thought. Variety claims that due to the international success of 'The Golden Compass' the foreign market would be quick to strike a deal on distributing the picture however if this is so the foreign distributors would be making more money than Warner Bros. which would be the company that would be producing it as Warner Bros does not have the foreign distributing rights and therefore would not benefit from a success in Europe, Asia and Africa. The entire article can be found here: http://www.variety.com/article/VR111... Summed up: Warner Bros. would want to release the sequels through Warner Intl. outside of the USA to gain profit out of 'His Dark Materials' apparent international success. However the independent foreign distributors, who had released 'The Golden Compass' in Europe, Australasia, Asia and Africa, still hold the rights to distribute the sequels internationally, as they had done with the first one. This means Warner Bros. lawyers will have to go over the fine print of this deal to see if it is possible to distribute the picture themselves. As Variety says: 'If the studio does decide that it wants to continue with the franchise -- and that's a big if -- it faces a tricky calculation and negotiation over how much of the world it is prepared to give up in order to do so.' Guess we'll just have to wait and see If anyone is still confused over anything here, please comment below and we'll explain | |||

| Producer Deborah Forte gives hope for His Dark Materials sequels | 618 days ago | ||
| Those still hoping that some day in the near future, adaptations of 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass' will be hitting the big screen, may be in for some hope yet. 'Golden Compass' producer Deborah Forte has stated to Variety that after the success of the first film in Japan and overall internationally: “I will make The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. I believe there are enough people who see what a viable and successful franchise we have.” The link can be found here: http://www.variety.com/article/VR111... The article also ponders on whether Warner Bros, which has taken over New Line's property of His Dark Materials, will greenlight sequels now that it is clear the movie has become a success despite low income in North America as Forte summarizes: "This was a success as a family movie in most countries, it's a very strong family franchise, it won an Academy Award. We have to make the second and the third movie." The article also talks of the script for 'The Subtle Knife' already written and that there is money to be made as the foreign market will most certainly snap up the deal and domestic income could pick up if Warner Bros market the film better than New Line had, as Variety theorizes that religion may not have affected profits as was thought earlier. Who knows within the next year we could get a greenlight on 'The Subtle Knife.' | |||
