| BRANCH: ASHERS ROADSIDE DINER BALLYEARL | hace 693 días | ||
| Pitstop: Monster servings fit to satisfy any cowboy Friday, May 11, 2007 By Judith Cole, BELFAST TELEGRAPH No sign of Clint Eastwood, but diner hits the spot for a fistful of dollars Where? Ashers Roadhouse Diner, 581 Doagh Road, Newtownabbey. Atmosphere? Extremely busy on the Saturday at high noon when we visited, with people sitting in the cafe and others ordering takeaways. Given its road-side position a few miles away from towns, the diner feels like it should be somewhere out in mid-west America - I kept expecting The Magnificent Seven to gallop in. Crowd? A very mixed bunch of families with their Sundance kids, workmen and groups of women. Some availed of the sunny weather and sat at the outdoor tables, and all were in very jolly mood - perhaps because it was a bank holiday weekend. Menu? A good variety of substantial fayre like fries, as well as salads and sandwiches, a kids' menu and some sweet options. A sandwich on thick cut bread costs £3, while a mini fry is £3.30 and a monster fry £4.95. Irish stew is £2.50 while a toastie costs £3.80. You can order a chip butty or Cornish pastie, while simple bread and butter will cost you £1. For a few dollars more you can have a salad, at £4. What did we have? To tie in with the western feel, I went for a cowboy supper of chips, sausages and egg, while my dad had a mini fry which included bacon, sausage, potato bread, soda bread, wheaten soda and tomato. Then I had a rice krispie bun while he had a chocolate eclair with fresh cream, and we also had tea and coffee. Disability access? Should be no problem here. The verdict? The diner was so busy that it was hard to find a table at first. The one we decided on hadn't been cleared up but a friendly waitress quickly obliged. The food arrived speedily and was very good indeed. If this fry was 'mini', I wonder what the 'monster' would be like. My dad said it was very tasty, and everything was dry and crisp, and not greasy. My cowboy supper would please any hard working rancher. As generous as the fry, it included two pork sausages, more than enough chips and a large egg. The chips could have been more crispy but were tasty nonetheless. There was a fairly good choice of traybakes and my Rice Krispie one was enjoyably light and sweet, while my dad's chocolate eclair was, unsurprisingly, generously sized and full of fresh cream. We were certainly ready to ride the high country after this feast. Last word? A good hearty meal for just a fistful of dollars. If only Clint Eastwood had dropped by! | |||
